Paddle-Fishing.com Challenge Series #2

This year is the tenth season for the Paddle-Fishing.com tournament series, the longest running kayak tournament series in the Tampa Bay area. I had the extreme good fortune to organize tournament number two in honor of my good friend Mark Bellotte, who passed away unexpectedly this past August. Mark was a huge participant in the tournaments, which were always geared to try to take anglers out of their comfort zones.

It’s Down to the Wire or the Last Cast

The Kayak Fishing ClassicS conducted the ninth of ten open tournaments on September 15 in Tampa Bay. The finish was so close that determining who will be the series champion will come down to the last tournament and the last cast. That’s competition, and it’s what everyone wanted in 2012.

Rain, rain and more rain changed everything at the Kayak Fishing ClassicS Pine Island Master Slam Classic on July 14. The inshore fishing had been very good prior to the near monsoon conditions that began a few days before the seventh Classic of the series year.

PFTS Mystery Lure Tournament

Sixty two anglers woke up bright and early on November 19th, in eager anticipation of kayak fishing tournament number two in the Paddle-Fishing.com Tournament Series. “The Mystery Lure” has all anglers using the same exact lure or in this case “lures”. This year the Mystery Lure was sponsored by Culpirt Riptide. As each angler signed in, they were handed their lure bag, loaded with an amazing assortment of lures.

Of the 44 registered kayak anglers only 10 were able to SLAM “catch a Redfish, Snook, and Seatrout”. Ben Homola of Fort Myers FL took first place with a total of 71.25” winning the grand prize a fully rigged Hobie Pro Angler.

2011 Irishwaterdogs Invitational

In 2010, the Irishwaterdogs Invitational was born. A fundraising event for Wolfson Children’s Hospital, nearly 100 kayak anglers hit the waters around Jacksonville, FL, to fish the slam, win cash prizes, and hopefully take home new kayaks.  Registration for the 2011 Irishwaterdogs Invitational is now open.  Hoping to double last year's attendance, the Cleft Palate Center of Jacksonville will be this years fund raising recipient.

“The Dynamic Duo”

Forty Seven anglers showed up for the first tournament of the 2010-2011 season, hosted by Paddle-Fishing.com. This is the eighth season for the Tampa Bay based web site and the tournaments this year are designed to test the angler’s skills in many unique ways. The Catch – Photo – Release format has competitors trying to catch the largest inshore slam consisting of Snook, Redfish and Speckled Trout. The first tournament of the year, called "The Dynamic Duo" allowed each angler to only bring two lures of their choice. Two lures only, no more. Lose them and you might as well pack it up and go home. So choosing the right lure combo was key.

I found this video on one of our fellow YakAngler's abadbackcast's blog.  The combination of sick camera angles, great locations, and killer editing make this one of the better videos I've seen in a long time!  Check it out and check out Rob's blog "A Bad Backcast And Other Inane Musings" for more Inane Randomness.

Pro Swim Bait's Pro Frogger

While fishing the Lake Harding leg of the 2010 Kayak Fishing Trail, I met a very educated kayak angler by the name of Mark (aka "landingcrew").  He raved about these frogs and gave me a quick demonstration and I have to admit these things are pretty sick.  I've since been checking the local shops and web for something comparable and I have to say that I haven't found anything yet.  If you like to bass fish and love the excitement of seeing a hog just slam on a topwater bait, I think that you need to check these guys out.
