My Reviews

Uniden Atlantis VHF Marine Radio

"When you're on the water, other boats can present hazards for kayak fisherman. They can also be a lifeline. Cell phones are great when you find yourself in a hairy situation, but they don't always work. That's where the VHF radio comes in. It allows for on-the-water communication with other boats on the water, the Coast Guard, and you can also get weather information in case you don't notice the storm moving in on your location...."
Baffin "Trail to Rapids" Footware

"Sometimes neoprene just doesn't cut it. You need a real shoe. You might be scrambling around oyster beds, portaging your gear around an obstacle, or just prefer to keep the feet protected. The problem with shoes is that water pools up inside, mud and sand pile up and make things uncomfortable. Baffin shoes, however, are different. For a company that is known to be "Polar Proven," many people would be surprised to see that Canada based..."

"One thing that was nice about my old place was that the garage lead into the basement. This made it easy for me to securely store my kayaks and keep room for the car. The new house, however, made kayak storage a little less convenient. Just a couple of kayaks and the garage was seemingly full; even on my rolling cart they were the elephant in the room. I needed another way. While the garage might be small, fortunately..."
Jackson Kayak "Cuda 12"

"I didn't think i had a place for the Cuda 12. I have a Coosa for my river fishing. I have a Cuda 14 for my ocean fishing. If I was fishing lakes, then I'd pick either the Coosa or the C14 depending on the size of the lake. Then I borrowed a Cuda 12. This is a slick little boat. It packs all the features of the C14 into a smaller package. It's nimble enough for..."

"Many kayak anglers won't even consider an inflatable kayak for fishing. Those folks are missing out on river fishing in those holes behind the Class III and higher rapids. They're also hauling around their hard-to-store-without-a-garage hard plastic kayaks in trucks that get gas mileage in the low teens. They're missing out on a kayak that can fit in a backpack and fit in the trunk of even some of the smallest cars - or even on the bus. It's called..."
Jackson Kayak “SUPerFISHal”

3.2
"For some folks, sitting down and paddling just isn't their cup of tea. For others, they just have to be able to stand up and fish, but have a hard time standing in even the widest of kayaks. Available now from Jackson Kayaks is the “SUPerFISHal”, a SUP designed for stand-up paddle board fishing. Using more muscles to move the SUP also means you can get more fit while fishing. The SUPerFISHal is built off the Jackson “SUPerNATURAL”, and..."

Kayaker wins World Championship

Last weekend, 50 fly anglers from around the US and Canada converged on McMinnville, TN, for the Musky Fly Fishing World Championship. Competitors hit a couple local rivers from bass boats, drift boats, and even a few kayaks. Their goal - catch and release the largest muskellunge using fly tackle, and promote musky conservation efforts. Little did they know, a kayak angler was going to take the win.

DIY: Kayak Stands

I needed another way to get my kayaks off the ground.  I had already built a kayak rack with casters on it, which is my primary storage rack.  It isn’t, however, very portable beyond my garage, even with the casters. I needed something I could break down and set up easily, and make a good place to work on, clean, and display my kayaks for a couple upcoming kayak fishing clinics.

New Lowrance Sonar Targets Kayak Fishermen

There's no doubt that the Kayak Fishing scene is growing.  Now Lowrance is engraining deeper into the sport with their newest offerings - the Elite-4 series of fish finders.  Lowrance is marketting these new sonar and chartplotter units as "Perfect for Kayaks."  Its time to take a closer look at these new units.

Further down the Oregon Coast, just on the south edge of Coos Bay, you will find Sunset Bay State Park. Protected by rocks just off shore, this beach launch is usually very calm and easily navigated. Those weary of surf launches usually feel right at ease at Sunset Bay. This little-known location is a great launch with plenty of fishing to be found in the area.

Keeping it Clean

Oregon, this weekend, joins its neighboring states of Washington and Idaho with mandatory boat inspection stations.  Kayaks are not exempt from these inspections which seak out possible invasive species that include quagga mussels, eurasian milfoil, and more.  Failure to stop will get you pulled over, and ticketed by the state patrol.  Let's take a look at common trouble areas on kayaks and how to deal with them.

Watersnake Universal Motor Mount

A product so new, Watersnake had no details other than the photos I was able to get.  The new universal motor mount will make powering your kayak as easy as any other kit, and it's very easily removed for times when you don't need.

Rite in the Rain

Keeping a log of your fishing adventures is the best way to keep track of your successes and failures. With time, a glance to the moon phase, tides, and weather can tell you exactly where you need to fish - provided you kept track in the past.  Rite in the Rain makes this even easier with waterproof log books.  Whether you bass fish, stalk reds on in the flats, or throw flies along the banks, Rite in the Rain has a professionally designed fishing log, and paddle logs, just for you.

YakAttack expands with GearTrac

Earlier this summer, YakAttack brought us a bunch of new products including the PanFish, the Carbon Pro, and the Mighty Mount.  Now, YakAttack has made rigging your kayak even easier with the new GearTrac system.  The GearTrack, especially when paired with RAM ball mounts, will be the ultimate new accessory for the DIY kayak rigger, kayak fishing guide, and anyone that fishes a variety of waters with a variety of methods.

Last year, the Jackson Kayak's 'Coosa took inland kayak fishing by storm.  An incredibly agile and stable fishing platform that excelled on small rivers, the Coosa still left a little to be desired on larger bodies of water where speed and direction are more desired.  Jackson Kayaks put Drew Gregory back to work and now two new fishing platforms are poised to hit the market.
