Cashing in at the “Bank”

During the annual frenzy of the spring trophy striper season when the tactics are mainly deep-water motorboat trolling with heavy gear, anglers can be rewarded with a fish of a lifetime. As spring nears an end and summertime temps start to creep up, the focus moves to other tactics and gear. Trolling stays in play, while jigging, chumming/chunking, and live-lining get in on the act. For me, the fast-paced action of light tackle along the shallow shores and marsh banks is the ticket!

Hardcore Swimbait Stripers, Part II

My father and I paddled a peaceful Alabama creek this past summer, and I captured some of the most exciting swimbait fishing I have ever experienced. I knew this trip would be special when my 6” Bull Shad got hammered on the very first cast.

Stripers on the Wando River

There have been reports lately of anglers catching tagged strippers on the upper Wando, along with some reds and trout. Greg and I decided to give the upper Wando a try, since the reports indicated a hot bite near Paradise Landing. On this trip, the Jackson Kayak “Big Rig” (with the Power Pole “Micro Anchor” and Raymarine “Dragonfly”) was my fishing vessel.

Cow Tipping in the Chesapeake

All the recent hoopla in the Chesapeake Bay region of big cow stripers has had me chomping at the bit to get in on the action. Our last trip out to Plantation Light yielded miles and miles of paddling, but no fish. Needless to say, I was bound and determined to nail one of those big ol' cows out of my kayak!

Big Winter Specs

After almost a month-long absence from my kayak due to my annual hunting trip to Wisconsin, it was once again time to board my Ocean Kayak “Trident 13”. This time of year has the big stripers making their way down the Chesapeake Bay - perfect for us Virginia-based anglers! I joined up with Joe Underwood, Matt Anderson, and Chuck Wrenn in search of the big ole' rockfish. We headed out to Plantation Light to drift with the sea of boats that all had the same idea. We were all hoping to have the same results that friend Rob Choi and crew had.

It’s Lightline Time: Safety in the Night

There’s nothing like the feeling of creeping under the darkness of a bridge to see a group of stripers stacked like cordwood, picking your target, and hooking up. As temperatures drop around the Mid-Atlantic, stripers are gravitating to lighted structure, creating some of the best fishing of the year for kayak anglers.

2012 NEKF Striper Shootout VIII Recap

The 8th Annual NEKF Striper Shootout was held August 17-19 at Winter Island in Salem, MA. This turnout this year was great, with over 150 registered anglers. The format changed this year as the competitors competed for the largest two-fish bag in a Catch-Photo-Release format. Additionally, a Youth division was added to the existing Open, Artificial, and Fly divisions...

2012 Help Hook The Cure Derby

On Saturday, August 25 I fished the 8th Annual Help Hook the Cure Derby, presented by the Winthrop Elks. Last year I fished this derby with my older son Ryley; he caught his first ever striper, and won the Youth Division (read about that here). This year, I decided to take both of my boys out to see what we could do, and man did it turn out to be a day to remember.

Spring RVA Stripers

It definitely seems like all the local migrations are happening earlier this year. The warm water temperatures are expediting the process and I, like most kayak fishermen, am not complaining. The magic of this time of year is more than welcome, as many of the popular sport fishing species enter our local waters and get our juices flowing.

Back in the Saddle

Friday night couldn't come soon enough – I was itching from anticipation. At 10:30 p.m., the first stop was HRBT, where I met up with Justin. I paddled out, keeping my eyes peeled for the welcome sight of a striper silhouette. I was paddling over a small one when a voice greeted me out of the darkness: "Dude, there's a big one right in front of you…"
