Ben Hoover

Ben is an avid kayak angler who plies the waters of Hampton Roads, Virginia with fly and light tackle. A transplanted Yankee, he developed a true taste for the salt after moving south of the Mason-Dixon. He is a proud HOW volunteer and remains loyal to http://www.flyfishersparadise.com/, his employer throughout college. Ben can be found on the water under cover of darkness, waving a stick in a plastic boat. He is slowly but surely learning to gear fish.

Beginners’ Kayak Fishing Essentials

I’ve got a kayak and fishing gear. What else do I need to start kayak fishing?
It’s a question that gets batted around quite a bit, and everyone has an opinion. Here’s what I came up with after examining my gear and consulting a few expert kayak anglers (thanks, everyone), plus a few items that are certainly nice to have. This list is by no means exhaustive, so please add your suggestions in the comments.

On August 11, 2013, some of the finest kayak anglers in the mid-Atlantic will gather in Swansboro, NC for the Airborne Angler Adventures Yak-Master Classic. The tournament will benefit Heroes on the Water and St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and the entry fee is a modest $25. Competitors are to receive captain’s bags and shirts, and there will be raffles as well.

The New and The Old

This spring, I decided I would finally head over to the Eastern Shore in search of my first bull red. Unfortunately, my schedule and the weather did not cooperate. I was left reading reports from local legends and wondering if I’d be able to pull off my first trip, let alone hook and land a decent red.

Intro to Kayak Flyfishing

If you've been fishing from a kayak for any period of time, you're familiar with the "You're crazy!" refrain from the public at large when you explain how you spend every free moment on the water. Kayak fly anglers likewise often get this response from other yak fishers when we reveal the long rod as our primary gear of choice.

The 2nd Annual ”Nature Coast Challenge”, a kayak Catch-Photo-Release tournament, was held in Yankeetown, FL on April 27, 2013. Sixteen anglers from Zephyrhills and Panama City in Florida, Hampstead, NC and points in between entered this year, including two first-time participants from the Nature Coast Lady Anglers Fishing Club in Crystal River, FL.

The Second Annual Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree is now in the books! This year was not quite as stellar weather or fish wise as 2012, unless you consider tornado watches stellar weather! Conditions were a little tough - especially for the folks in tents - but a good time was had by all!

Family Time on the Water

With a free weekend on the calendar and temperatures in Pennsylvania on the rise, I decided to visit my folks for their first paddle of 2013. The fact that their home water is a decent hybrid muskie lake made the calculus even easier, and I was homeward bound, hoping some fish would be going through the spawning motions.

UV? Or Knot UV?

In the sport of kayak fishing, it’s often the small things that make a difference: the proper size weight, the right launch time to hit the river as it drops, the knot that won’t let you down on the fish of a lifetime, the right color bait, etc. These little difference makers often also come in the form of inexpensive products that sit right under our noses. For me, ultraviolet (UV) knot glue is one of these products. I use Loon “UV Knot Sense” and Rio “UV Knot Sealer”, depending on what’s in stock at my favorite shops.

Exploring Virginia rivers in the spring is a rite of the season, full of opportunity. Itching to break out of the winter doldrums, I hit the water on a warm day to see what was stirring as the water temps inched upwards.
