How to Fish Your Fluke

Soft jerkbaits are quite possibly one of the most consistent lures in your tackle box. There are a multitude of different offerings by plastic companies, but much like the soft drink world, they are all called “flukes” thanks to the popularity of Zoom Bait Company’s “Super Fluke”. I prefer Zoom’s super fluke for my soft jerkbait applications.

Keeping an open mind

Many of my close friends and fishing buddies know me for my many “life lesson” slogans that I’ve picked up from some of the most inspirational people throughout my life. As I sit in front of my keyboard and reflect on the past weekend of fishing, one slogan comes to me: "Keep an open mind."

A Winter Large Mouth Trip in Kentucky

I had the chance to hit the water yesterday (December 28) and I wasn't going to miss it. Most people think I am crazy going out in freezing temperatures and chasing fish. I absolutely love winter fishing! The action is slow, but I love the challenge and how peaceful it is out on the water this time of the year. Although fishing is tough, the reward this time of year is usually bigger fish.

A much needed outing

Therapeutic. That's what today's kayak fishing trip was. I didn't tear them up. I only caught five fish. I had a run in with a pair of inconsiderate jerks who decided to fish on top of me. I felt I needed to stay within sight of the launch. I only had an hour and a half to fish. No matter. I needed to get out today after a little bout with walking pneumonia.

The Compound Where Its Never Slow

Last Thursday I got a txt from CoachJoe asking if I wanted to fish the infamous Fish Compound that Saturday. It had been raining all week and was in the mid 30’s, not the best weather to be out in your kayak fishing, but when your asked if you want to fish the Compound you just ask “what time are we meeting up”.

Loosing Count While Kayak Fishing

The Gamakatsu Shaky head and Zoom Magnum Trick Worm did it again for me. The wind was absolutely brutal. Sustained 30 and gusting to 40 tough conditions for any kayak fisherman. I had to get creative to finding a spot that offered some protection. We've had a ton of rain this past week in my part of Oklahoma, so the river I normally fish was up and had a lot of current. It's been very low all year with our drought conditions, so I was glad to see it up and running. Seems like it needed a good "flushing out."
