8 Great Springtime Bass Lures

For many kayak anglers around the country, water temps are quickly on the rise, and they have one thing on their minds - springtime bass! Most bass in the southern states have completed their spawn, and other northern states have just started to see them bed down. Here are eight lures that will help you catch those springtime bass.

Springtime Fishing in the Lowcountry

Springtime is when I start thinking about Easter egg hunts, baby chicks, ducklings, and bunnies. When it comes to the springtime season and inshore fishing around the Lowcountry, I realize the clear water we enjoy during the winter is going to start looking like chocolate milk. The clarity of the inshore waters will vary from river to river. As weather and water conditions change, so do the fish species that I’ll target from my kayak.

Springtime Hybrids

Here in Texas, the winter has had its time and spring is showing up throughout the weekly forecasts. A week ago we were dealing with water temps around 40°F and the fish, not used to chilly water, seemed uncooperative. This week sees a large warming trend, and signals the beginning of hybrid striped bass season.

Spring RVA Stripers

It definitely seems like all the local migrations are happening earlier this year. The warm water temperatures are expediting the process and I, like most kayak fishermen, am not complaining. The magic of this time of year is more than welcome, as many of the popular sport fishing species enter our local waters and get our juices flowing.

Springing Forward

It had just been too long since I’d been fishing seriously. Since I started kayak fishing in 2007, I’ve pretty much fished every weekend that it was nice. This past winter, I went ahead and got the gear required and tried to fish twice every weekend. Then in February, I had to deal with some things that kept me off the water. It was miserable. I really missed fishing - a lot - but I felt I needed to take care of other matters, both professionally and personally. I did get out a couple of times in February, but the trips were short and unproductive. I felt like I was fishing out of spite. I didn’t care for that too much at all. Kayak fishing has become a really big part of my life and who I am. I was really bummed that I wasn’t getting out.

Spring Fishing Part 1

Now that the not-so-wintery winter is behind us here in central Florida, it's time to pack away the waders and the sweatshirts and look ahead to lighter clothing and warmer water. The spring fishing season is here rather early on the Space Coast. This time of year kicks off with the spring bait run that includes shrimp, finger mullet, pigfish, pilchards and pogies.
