Leave no Trace: Fishing

While attending the recent Outdoor Retailers summer trade show, I came across a plethora of “Leave no Trace” (LNT) cards related to different outdoor activities. As soon as I spotted the “Fishing” card, I grabbed it and tucked it away into my field notes booklet; I knew I had to write an article about LNT.

2014 F3T Film Review

2014 is the seventh year for the Fly Fishing Film Tour. I have become a fan of F3T, and have been to the last three. Many anglers are catching the bug, as the two events for Charleston sold out at least a few weeks before the February 22 showings. I’m sure that it was the same story in Boise, ID. This year’s eight short films were all “thumbs up” in my opinion, and that of others I talked to after the show.

March Fishing Report

Winter is finally breaking in the south and allowing for some manageable days out. Today gave me bluebird skies and some wind (but manageable) on Lady Bird Lake in downtown (yep I said downtown) Austin, TX.

Spring Kayak Fishing In January

It’s 4:53am when I hear the back door open and shut very quickly. I’m in bed. I can hear my wife walk down the hallway, muttering about how cold it is outside. She’s a dairy farmer. She’s up each day at 1:50 am for the first milking. I ask her if she took a look at the thermometer when she left the dairy. “Ten below,” she says with disgust. She crawls in with me, puts her ice-cold feet on my warm legs, and I hop immediately out of bed. It’s time to go fishing.

Jackson Kayak Big Rig Overview

As I drove down the dirt road I had no idea what lay ahead of me; I had never seen the lake we were fishing, and the kayak I was using was a brand-new release. When I turned the corner I saw the typical wrapping of a newly-shipped kayak sticking out of the bed of a pickup truck. What was in the wrapper was anything but typical though.

Dead Drifting, Not Jerking

Last February accounted for more 20” river smallmouth in my trip report log than any month so far this year. I expect December to beat it. The pattern that works for so many big river smallmouth? To tell you “suspending jerkbaits over ledge trenches” would only tell you about 30% of the story. The other 70% - the important part - is how long between jerks. To be honest, unless the water is fairly stained, the jerks are inconsequential.

Four Kayaks You Should Try Under $600

Let's face it - not everyone has tons of coin to drop on kayaks. I'm one of those guys. I've horse traded my way to where I am, and it's taken almost eleven years to do it. Don't think for a second that it's all glitz and glam here. For you, the guy slugging away fifty hours a week for 50% of what you're worth, I know that money in your pocket is never enough - but the sweet release that fishing gives you keeps you going.
