Going Weightless With Soft Plastics

My love of fishing weightless soft plastics came from pure necessity. As a kid on foot, the only lake I could get to and fish daily was ringed with an impenetrable mass of pads, weeds, and stickups. I circled that lake so many times I wore my own groove in the ground on its bank. Locals swore up and down I was wasting my time, and that the weed choked pond was devoid of fish.

How to Fish Your Fluke

Soft jerkbaits are quite possibly one of the most consistent lures in your tackle box. There are a multitude of different offerings by plastic companies, but much like the soft drink world, they are all called “flukes” thanks to the popularity of Zoom Bait Company’s “Super Fluke”. I prefer Zoom’s super fluke for my soft jerkbait applications.

It was no surprise to us when the "3D PVC Crab" was announced as the winner of best soft plastic fishing lure at ICAST 2014. The lure looks amazingly lifelike in and out of the water.

The “Lure Makers” – Plastics, Anyone?

Fishermen have used artificial fishing lures for ages. The ability to attract fish with an artificial bait using movement, vibration, flash, and color has been the mainstay of many people who yearn to catch fish. Behind the scenes there are the “lure makers” - the guys and gals who design new and intriguing imitations that will entice fish to strike. This series is dedicated to people who make plastic, feathers, fur, metal, and wood come to life in our aquatic world.

I’ve only recently switched over and dedicated myself to fishing lures instead of live bait. I’ve also recently partnered up with a masterful angler who is willing and able to share years of knowledge with me that I’m delighted to be able to pass along to anyone who will listen. After only this spring learning to love and appreciate the versatility and functionality of the jig, and with water temperatures warming to over 70°F here in middle Tennessee it’s time to set the jig aside and switch technique.

I like shortcuts to make things easier. I like having a backup plan if things don't go the way they should. I'm a kayak fisherman, and I have to make things simple and accessible. I created the following video to show you how I tie a clinch knot more quickly than most (I did it more slowly than usual in the video so you could follow it easily). The improved clinch knot will work the same way.

Comfort Baits

I regularly get asked about what my favorite lures are. I normally come up with a response like “It depends on the situation,” or “The one that they are biting on…”. Now I know these answers aren’t terribly helpful to people, and I normally expand on them. However, I have made it a point to not try to tie myself to one lure or technique over the years.

Finesse Fishing Tips

With all the talk I've been hearing lately about finesse fishing I decided it was time to gain a better understanding of what the term means (other than the obvious) and learn the subtleties involved with fishing it.  It turns out I've already been experimenting with this tactic, I just didn't realize it.  I was just trying to find things that looked good moving in the water.
