SWFKAA Tournament Results

The Southwest Florida Kayak Anglers Association’s 2nd Annual Inshore Kayak Classic is over and another year is in the books. There were over 40 anglers competing for a brand new Hobie “Outback”, a Kaku kayak, and cash prizes in this marathon overnight event. In the end, only five anglers could place, but the competition was fierce as many of the participants found their slams.

A Return to the Water

There is a recurring theme that runs through my mind all the time: “We are drawn to the water.” I think as kayaking anglers, we all are drawn to the water. That’s why the last three months have been very frustrating, to say the least. I started feeling strange last summer - I noticed loading the kayak was getting harder, and the trips were getting more difficult. Even holding a fishing rod was becoming laborious. Finally, three months ago I hit rock bottom.

Winter Fishing Tactics

The winter season is upon us here in Southwest Florida.  This can be a great time of year to fish from the kayak. During the winter months we deal with cold fronts, negative low tides, windy days and cold water temperatures. These conditions can be tough, and I wanted to share my thoughts on a few techniques, lure choices and the best times to be on the water for the top four targeted species in my region - snook, redfish, speckled (or spotted) trout, and flounder.

Kayak Fishing The Sound

When people around here think of Pine Island Sound they think of crystal clear flats, big fish and high powered inshore boats. When I think of the sound what comes to mind isn’t high powered outboards but instead I think of silently paddling up to a school of tailing redfish.

Estero Bay Kayak Fishing Action

“There are no fish in Estero Bay”. That was always the tongue in cheek answer given by the locals when asked, “Where was a good place to fish in the bay”. I have been fishing Estero Bay for around 20 years with varying results, but I can tell you now, the fish are back!
