Mountain Brook Reservoir 4-27-13

It’s late April, and the ice has barely been out for three weeks in southwest New Hampshire. I decided to head out at the crack of 8:00 to see what was going on at the local ponds. The cool morning quickly warmed with the sun, and I was surprised to see the water temperature when I launched was 52°F; a week ago it was just pushing 40°F. The water was glassy calm, and I was hoping to find some bass moving up into the shallow water and laying their claim to some prime bedding spots.

Goin’ Home, I’m Goin’ Home

In dire need of some rest and relaxation, I loaded up the truck this past weekend and hit the road for Pennsylvania. The drive is not short, but the worst part was paying the $12 Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel toll and driving past the striper fleet anchored up under the High Rise. I glanced over toward the famed concrete ships, knowing that at least a few kayakers were down in the blackness, dunking eels for the Kipto Kows. I’d hoped to join them this year, but it wasn’t to be.On the plus side, I didn’t need to buy a heavy outfit.

Tails of the Troll

There is something about this time of year that gets my blood flowing! Could it be the leaves changing colors? Maybe… Could it be the deer are chasing and the ducks are flying? Maybe… Or could it be the fact that the fish are hungry and starting to put on their feed bag for winter? Hmm, maybe! One thing is for certain, though: it's fall, and I LOVE IT!

2010 Top Fishing Brands

This is a marketing survey I recently stumbled upon in the magazine In Fisherman.  The results were gathered from over 30,000 anglers who completed an internet survey at Southwick Associate's  Anglersurvey.com.

Bass On The First Cast

We got to the lake right as the Sun was rising and before getting into the kayaks, Joe made a cast along the shore with a top water… Bam first cast and he has a bass! I quickly follow suit throwing a Pop-R and managed to catch 3. 4 Bass in the first 5 minutes of being there; and we were still standing at the launch… This was going to be a good day!

I certainly do not claim to be an expert or pro but I did want to take a quick moment to share with you what lures I’ve had success with over the last few weeks.  I thought that it would be fun to share because if you’re anything like me you are always looking for tips on what might trigger the next bite.

Tiny Details Create Bigger Catches

I just returned from a late-season fishing trip to the Mississippi River. We were fishing near Lansing Iowa. My fishing partners were Jim Hunt and Terry Fitzpatrick: Both work at the Cabela's store in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin and are expert anglers.

The Mississippi River had been at flood stage for several weeks, but was back down to normal levels. A very strong windstorm had just gone through, with the wind turning the water to a chocolate milk color in the main channel and many of the backwaters. And the water temperatures had dropped about ten degrees in the past few days. Often, these conditions create tough fishing.

Rapala Trolls To Series

For those of us kayak anglers that like to troll while we're out fishing, Rapala has created a great product.  The Trolls-to series is perfect for paddling speeds and fishes depths 15-20 feet.  The Trolls-To series comes in two categories; the trolls-to-minnow and the trolls-to-shad.
