Those looking forward to the Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River will, unfortunately, have to wait a little longer for the event.

It was originally scheduled for April 8 to 11, 2021, but has now been moved to August 19 to 22, 2021, instead. The event is known for drawing record-breaking crowds, with the total being more than 96,000 during three previous visits. However, due to the regional mandates that are currently in place for COVID safety, this number would have had to been reduced dramatically.

According to Orange County Judge John Gothia, the top priority is to keep everyone from the anglers, staff, community, and all the fans who want to attend the event safe. He mentioned that previous tournaments in the area brought Orange County waterways to the forefront in the fishing world and that they are looking forward to welcoming the Elite Series and its fans back later in the year.

The shift in date was done to ensure that both competition and fan activities are held safely and responsibly. Care is also taken to work closely with local hosts and authorities in regards to the mandates on crowd sizes and public spaces for each state. Because of the new dates in August fish care is also a major priority as temperatures in the area are likely to soar. B.A.S.S National Conservation Director, Gene Gilliland, stated the importance of anglers and his team to protect the fish. According to Gilliland, the goal is for all the fish to be returned to the waters so that other passionate bass anglers can catch them again.

The change in dates only affects the Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River as the other Texas tournament, the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Fork is still scheduled for April 22-25. This is because the event will be hosted in Quitman, which is not experiencing the same restrictions in terms of outdoor gathering sizes.
