Muskie aficionados should be familiar with Muskie Expo Chicago, which is one of the largest events of its type. The event took place in January and drew a number of attendees, including St. Croix Rod and other exhibiting manufacturers in the muskie fishing industry. However, this year St. Croix Rod did more than just connect with the anglers retails and other exhibitors attending the expo, they also competed for "Best New Muskie Rod."
It was the new for 2019 Legend Tournament LM90MLF Bantam Bait Musky Downsizer rod that ended up being chosen as the winner by a panel of muskie experts.

This rod is only one of three in the Legends Tournament Musky Downsizer mini-series, all of which have been designed with muskie anglers more frequently fishing small baits in mind. There are a number of reasons for this growing trend, including the fish fatigue that stems from big baits to the physical toll big baits can have on anglers.

According to Rich Belanger, who is the  Promotions Manager and resident muskie expert at St. Croix, the Downsizer series was specifically designed for the many muskie anglers who are returning to their beginning stages with smaller baits. It's not just physical necessity that compels many of them to do so, but also the fact that these smaller baits have been around for decades and have a proven track record for catching large fish. The bait and rods used for muskie fishing have steadily been growing larger for the past several years, so it is interesting to see a shift back towards the smaller sizes.

Belanger was quick to point out that the development of their award winning rod was not an overnight process, but rather the result of years of hard work. Belanger himself was one of the people who extensively tested the rods for the past four to five years before the official launch. Belanger, along with the rest of the St. Croix team, were incredibly pleased with the recognition, but also gave a lot of credit to their customers. According to Belanger, it is because the company listens to their customers that they are able to bring products like the Legends Tournament Musky Downsizer mini-series to the market.
