Kayak angling is a very relaxing hobby and a great way to unwind, but like all outdoor activities, it has its fair share of dangers. Most of these dangers can be avoided by using common sense, the right gear and taking all the necessary precautions. However, sometimes you will run into unexpected scenarios that are virtually impossible to plan for.

While many encounters when kayak fishing can be very dangerous, such as drawing the attention of a shark or crocodile when you are out on the water, others are a little more unique. Sometimes these encounters can be dangerous, but many of them are just strange. Here are a couple clips of kayak anglers who had some unique encounters while they were busy minding their own business and trying to catch some fish.

Traumatized Dog

When you are kayak angling out in the middle of a large body of water you might still reasonably expect to encounter some type of aquatic animal. However, an angler named Rory O’Connor was amazed to see a dog swimming up to him. Rory discovered that the dog was in obvious distress, but couldn’t figure out why the scared animal was way out in the water. After rescuing the dog and returning it to the shore, he attempted to find the owner only to later discover that the traumatized animal belonged to a woman who was killed in a hit and run accident a mile from where the dog was swimming. The dog, named Barney, was reunited with the rest of the family, but who knows what would have happened if Rory didn’t encounter the dog and made sure it got to safety.

An Octopus

Sometimes the biggest surprise you encounter when out kayak fishing is at the end of your line as the angler in this clip discovered. The man, named Bryce, was battling what he thought was a snag when it suddenly gave way. However, when he reeled in his line he felt something heavy on it. It soon became apparent that he had a large octopus at the end of his line. A friend of Bryce was able to capture some great footage of the octopus underwater using his camera. Since the octopus swallowed a large hook its survival wasn’t very likely, but according to the video it was eaten, so it didn’t go to waste.

A Deer

The angler in the following clip was just enjoying another day of fishing in the local lake from his kayak when he spotted a deer just standing on the shore. After paddling closer to check out the deer, he was surprised when instead of fleeing the animal actually came towards him. As other anglers watched in amazement, the deer waded into the water. After noticing that the deer was wearing a collar, the angler beached up his kayak on the shoreline and went to meet the curious animal. The man then left to continue his angling, but the deer was so tame that he managed to feed it some oats when he encountered it again on the way back.

An Iguana

The angler in this clip was coming in from an offshore strip when he spotted something weird floating around in the distance. As he was four miles offshore, the last thing he expected was for the it to be an iguana. While it is not that uncommon for these lizards to go for a swim, this one was pretty far from solid ground and seemed eager enough to hitch a ride on his kayak. It also waited patiently on the kayak until it was close enough to some mangroves to make a swim for safety.

A Mysterious Structure

Just ninety minutes from the United States border at the southern tip of Texas you’ll find the 42,000 surface-acre lake of El Cuchillo. It is home to a mix of Florida bass and northern largemouth bass, which makes for great kayak fishing. However, as can be seen in the following clip, if you paddle out on this lake you might also run into some really strange and kind of creepy memorials. Although it isn’t clear why this particular memorial is in the lake, they are usually created on spots where someone has lost their life. The memorial in the video consists of a cross inside a metal cage, which is a rather unusual thing to encounter while fishing to say the least.

A Playful Seal

Kayak angling in the ocean requires a lot of precautions and there is always the risk of running into something larger than you would like. This is why it is no surprise that the  unfortunate angler in this video clip jumped not just once, but twice when a playful seal made an unexpected appearance. The angler was busy pulling up his anchor when the seal leaped out of the water behind him. Before the angler had a chance to recover from his initial fright, the seal made another unexpected leap past the startled man.
