Is the Kayak Fishing Boondoggle “moving on up?”

The Kayak Fishing Boondoggle™ needs your vote to be considered for a $150,000 grant from Chase’s Mission Main Street program, sponsored by Google.

That’s right! If we can obtain 250 unique votes from Facebook users before October 17, we’ll be in the running. I believe we can win! After all, we put a lot of thought and effort into answering the essay questions, and I think we’ve got a good “product” .

There will be twenty winners chosen from more than 35,000 entries. Yikes! Anyway, winners also receive a trip to Google's headquarters for a small-business marketing workshop, a Chromebook laptop, and a $2,000 credit toward a market research study with Google Consumer Surveys.

It’s exciting to think about actually receiving the grant. I think about what we could do with the proceeds. It would be liberating to be able to fund the event without having to dig into our personal funds.

Many people don’t realize that the BoondoggleX costs money to put together. We need to pay for the campsites months in advance so the parks will agree to hold them and remove them from the Reserve America website. Then there are shirts to pay for, as well as banners, printing costs, and equipment rentals. The parks also require us to purchase liability insurance in case someone gets hurt.

Then there’s the cost of developing our event-management website which, by the way, will save us a ton of money in the long run because the alternatives are too costly or time-consuming. And let’s not forget to mention the endless hours we invest in the preparations.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining one bit. I love everything about the Boondoggles, and I get a lot of personal satisfaction from it. Adam, Mark, and I all do. Whatever it costs us in time and money is worth it because the Boondoggles are AMAZING.

The Boondoggles bring people from different locations together as a community, as a family. Friendships among Boondogglers don’t dwindle as a result of physical distance. If we can’t fish together, we have social networks to keep us connected. That’s the beauty of the Kayak Fishing Boondoggle™ – it’s a place where everyone thrives.

Which brings me back to our subject matter – the Chase grant. You see, our vision is much bigger than a weekend of camping and kayak fishing. That’s not to say there’s no value in the original Boondoggle concept, where friends simply camp and fish without the hullabaloo of the BoondoggleX. The Boondoggle is where Mark, Adam, and I actually get to fish, relax and hang out!

We’re on a mission to grow the BoondoggleX. It has tremendous potential to promote the kayak fishing industry, influence our youth, help our small kayak fishing-related business owners, and increase environmental awareness and stewardship of our fisheries and waterways. Last but not least, the BoondoggleX helps our wounded warriors by supporting Heroes on the Water (HOW).

To us, it’s more than fun and games. It’s something much bigger, and the opportunity to be considered for a grant is awesome. Just imagine how $150,000 could help improve the events and extend our reach!

We need the money. But if we don’t win (as disappointing as it would be), we’ll have learned some great things from the application process, and we’ll keep on Boondoggling! We’ve brought it this far; we completed the application. We’re “moving on up” and we need your help. So go to the link and vote so we at least stand a chance!
