Reel Recovery is a fly-fishing support retreat started nationally in 2003 by a group of avid fly-fishers, inspired by their fishing buddy's ongoing battle with brain cancer. Witnessing first-hand the beneficial impact fly-fishing provided their friend, the group created Reel Recovery to provide the same opportunity for other men battling the disease.

Reel Recovery is a national non-profit organization that conducts free fly-fishing retreats for men recovering from life-threatening cancer. Combining expert fly-fishing instruction with directed "courageous conversations", the organization offers a unique experience for men with cancer: a time to share their stories, learn a new skill, form lasting friendships and gain renewed hope as they confront the challenges of their recovery.

Though only a few days in duration, a Reel Recovery retreat can be a life-changing event for men battling cancer. The program is designed to be both experiential and reflective, to develop group camaraderie as well as individual skills, and to build bonds of friendship that provide a reservoir of personal hope.

Reel Recovery KY/IN was started in 2005. It is a partnership with the Reel Recovery national organization. KY/IN Reel Recovery has offered a retreat every year since 2005. It is held at Wooded Glen Retreat & Conference Center in Henryville, IN, a beautiful facility.

This year, in order to help fund this retreat (which is totally free to all participants), we are holding a "One Fly For Cancer" event on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Otter Creek Park Road, Brandenburg, KY 40208. Registration and the rules will begin at 8am, and fishing will be from 9am to 1pm. Preregistration is $40, or $50 at the event. Past Reel Recovery participants can fish for $20 preregistration or $30 at the event. The entry fee includes one fly, coffee, doughnuts, and lunch. It does not include a $3 park entry fee. Additional "Mulligan" flies can be purchased for $5 each. A Kentucky fishing license is required.

The team (blind draw for partners) that catches the most trout wins a plaque. Door prizes donated by Cabela's and Bass Pro will be awarded in random drawings during lunch.

To participate in the One Fly For Cancer event, go to http://reelrecovery.org/how-to-help/donate/ Click on $40 (or $20 if past retreat participant) and under One Time, type in "For One Fly KY/IN" and complete billing info. If you’re mailing a check please make it out to Reel Recovery and send it to 160 Brookside Road, Needham, MA 02492. Be sure and designate "One Fly KY/IN" on the check.

Volunteers from Derby City Fly-Fishing Club have been instrumental in planning and executing this fund raiser. Help has also been given by Trout Unlimited and Northern KY Fly-Fishers. Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Meade County Tourism department also contributed in the development of this fundraiser.

We hope you will put this on your calendar and participate in helping Reel Recovery KY/IN continue to provide this beautiful, free retreat to any man battling cancer.
