Best $100 Reel

I got this reel in December of 2012 and have put it to work for two years straight. I cannot count the amount of fish this reel has brought in with out failure. It just went in last month for its first service along side a Ci4 that was equally old and the Ci4 needed a new bearing not the $100 Symetre. While I take great care of my gear by cleaning an lubing it regularly it is nice to see reasonably priced reels have quality parts. While the Shimano reels are not known to be as bullet proof as some of the Penn reels this one holds its own I will say it is equally solid as a battle, has better drag and is lighter, but cost the same. When looking for a reel in the $100 dollar market put this one on the list!

Shimano Symetre FL

I purchased the Shimano Symetre FL 2500 several months ago. I went to the store with the intention of buying another Shimano Stradic because it is my reel of choice. However, after reading several reviews which maintained that the Symetre is a good "economical" substitute for the Stradic, I decided to buy the Symetre for review purposes. I was skeptical that it could impress me after having used the Stradic but it did. With that said, keep in mind my review will be based on my experiences with the Stradic.

The Symetre FL is a great option for those looking for a great spinning reel but who are not wanting to "break the pocket book". This reel has a very smooth cast and retrieve. I won't say it is as smooth as the Stradic but it is exceptional. One of the best features it offers, which the Stradic does not, is its compact body design. It feels great in my hand and allows for long hours of casting.

The only con, and I had to think hard about this, is it appears to struggle a little with larger fish. I have landed some large Redfish with this reel and noticed it did not perform as well as my Stradic and both are on the same rods. This is not to say it won't do the job but it does not handle it with as much ease as the Stradic.

To sum it up, the Shimano Symetre FL is a great reel for the price. The compact body design is a nice feature which adds to it being a serious consideration for even those that can spend a little extra on a "high-end" model. I still love my Stradic but I am not disappointed in the Symetre's performance and it will be a serious consideration for future purchases.
