Review: YakAttack "Mighty Mount" Scotty Kit

Last fall, I received a YakAttack “Mighty Mount™ Scotty® 241 Track Mount Kit” to try out. This kit comes with two “Mighty Mounts”, a Scotty “241” base, and the hardware to install it on Wilderness Tracks (5/8” track) or ½” wide tracks like the YakAttack “Gear Track”. The kit retails for $30 on YakAttack's website, and for an extra $5 you get both sets of hardware so you can mount it to any track system. I don't have a kayak of my own with a track system, so I had to sneak my wife's Tarpon out to give it a try.

When I opened the bag it was clear this is a well made product. The plastic is solid, the hardware is all stainless steel, and the nuts are the nyloc type so they won’t come loose when you don’t want them to. It’s also nice to know that the guys at YakAttack support American jobs - they source and manufacture everything they can in the USA.

Assembling the mount is straightforward, and takes less than a minute. It slid right on the track system and locked solidly to the track. The mount is solid enough that you can lift the kayak with it (although I don’t recommend trying this). Thanks to the supplied wing nuts, you can reposition the mount easily while on the water. I was even able to do this with light cold water gloves on. The last feature that I find very handy is that the mount can be slid off the track by just loosening the thumb screws. You do not need to remove any hardware, so you will not lose anything. The wing nuts are also nyloc nuts, so they won’t rattle loose in transport.

The Might y Mount Track Mount Kit is a great product that does exactly what it is supposed to do, and in my opinion does it better than any of the other options on the market. If you have a track system on your kayak and want to add a Scotty mount, I would highly recommend you go to YakAttack.us./p>
