Bending Branches Angler Ace

Been using this paddle since August 2015. I demo'd a bunch of kayaks this year and used the heavier paddles provided. I asked a shop if I could try the Angler Ace at the last demo I went to and I could not believe how light it was. I feel like I could paddle all day and not feel fatigued due to weight. I have also made use of the hook removal/retrieval notch a few times and it worked like a charm. It spared me from losing $30+ in lures so far. Great paddle!

One major flaw

Very light weight, seems to be pretty durable. I'm a minimalist when it comes to outfitting my yak, so I appreciate having the means to measure fish right on the handle...Just one less thing (tape measure) I have to bring along. The only thing I -don't- like about this paddle is the "hook removal" notch on the paddle blade, it regularly snags on bungees and other on board items. While I think that Bending Branches makes some fine paddles, I would -not- buy this specific paddle again because of my experiences with the "hook removal" notch.

Bending Branches Angler Ace

I purchased this paddle in December 2013. My initial thoughts during the unboxing were that the paddle was heavier than expected for a carbon shaft paddle. However, after much use I realized what made this an exceptional paddle was its swing weight, which makes paddling almost effortless. I was impressed with the tight fit at the connection point, which makes for a better paddling experience as well. The paddle comes with a place to measure fish on the paddle itself and a hook retrieval system. I have yet to use the hook retrieval system as of yet and it has only been good at getting snagged on bungee and other things on the kayak. I have noticed the blades tend to show wear easily, things such as nicks and scratches. Overall, I am pleased with the paddle, which has made paddling much more enjoyable. It has cut down on the effort put into paddling, has allowed me more time on the water, and has allowed me to travel further on my trips. I am pleased with the purchase.

Well designed and a joy to use

I upgraded from a 240cm Bending Branches Whisper that I used for years and found more than capable to the Angler Ace in 250cm to deal with a wider boat and higher seating. The Angler Ace, despite the description info, comes in sizes over 240cm which is great for the newer wider fishing yaks especially ones with high/low seating. This paddles light weight is an asset on long paddles especially in current. The built in tape measure is nice to have for a quick check and the lure retrieval hook on the blade is pretty handy once you get the hang of how to use it. I would recommend storing this paddle out of the elements (as you should with all paddles) to protect the clear coat and maintain that extra cool carbon fiber look. The only reason i didnt give this paddle 5 stars (should be 4.99 stars) is that I can forsee the blades being a little more fragile than the ones on a Whisper. Pushing off rocks or any abbrasive surface will mar the blade edges badly pretty quick, I try not to use the paddle to push off but its going to happen. The overall stiffness and strength of the blades are great but they scuff up pretty easy around the edges. This paddle is a keep though and look for the longer lengths they are out there!

Major upgrade

This paddle has been a major upgrade and an outstanding tool to have in the kayaking toolbox. I got this paddle in January of 2013 and have been using it to cover lots of water this year. I was going to get the Angler Pro but the type of areas that I fish would cause a lot of damage to the fiberglass blades so I went with the Angler Ace since it only weighs one ounce more than the pro and cost $100 less. Its has worked out great. The only down side have been when the paddle gets slim on it the slickness of the paddle can be difficult to deal with and over this year the clear coat on the paddle has taken some damage. This might be due to some lack of care and sun damage but still its not too much and has not hurt the integrity of the paddle. Over all this is an outstanding paddle that works great for a fishing platform.
