Cost and functionality

When our family's Jackson Kayak “SUPerFISHal” showed up, I had no clue what to look for in a stand up paddle. My only experience with stand up paddleboards was with a local outfitter on a demo day, and there were a couple of paddle options to try. One was heavy and bulky, and I wouldn't subject myself to that. The other was a dream to paddle and beautiful, but had a price tag more than my first kayak.

As I looked around Outside World Outfitters Columbus, I was hunting a paddle that would compromise cost and functionality. It had to be light enough to be comfortable for all day paddling, and it needed to be adjustable because multiple people will be paddling our SUPerFISHal. Chris Largent, the shop manager, knew just exactly what I needed and handed me the Werner “Fiji” adjustable stand up paddle.

The Fiji is as light as my normal angler paddles and has a nice finish to it. The tee grip has a bit of an angle to it and fits comfortably in the hand. It extends from 77” – 84” with a push-button type lock. The variable lengths are handy for multiple paddlers, or extend it full length and you can use it like a push pole. The one dislike I have is when you extend the paddle; the edges of the two halves are pretty rough on your hands. That could be remedied with an aftermarket paddle wrap, or it will probably dull with usage.

There are three different styles of the Fiji paddle - one, two, and three piece models - and three different lengths. These options should make it a bit easier for those that are new to stand up boards to find something that fits their needs. Bonuses for me are the Fiji is made in America, and Werner is known to stand behind their warranty. The Werner Fiji SUP paddle is a good paddle that will stand up to plenty of use and doesn’t require a second mortgage to purchase.
