Fenix PD35TAC flashlight

Between my years in the fire service, law enforcement, USAR, and the great outdoors, I’ve had the opportunity to look at, play with, and use a LOT of different flashlights. Last fall I wanted to replace the light on my duty belt with a high-output LED unit. I’m a Fenix fan, so the PD35 series was an obvious choice.

The heart of the PD35TAC is a Cree XP-L (V5), driven by either two CR123 lithium ion batteries or a single 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery. At 5.5” long by an inch in diameter, it’s comparable to other tactical lights on the market in size. It’ll fit the same holsters, rail mounts, and other accessories made for 1” lights. It has side and tailcap switches for switching power and light modes.

The two things that really make the PD35TAC stand out in the field are its versatility, and the punch it packs in light output. The light has two basic modes of operation - Tactical, and Outdoors. In Tactical mode, the side switch is disabled. The tailcap button switches between turbo, strobe, momentary, and low modes. More about “turbo” in a moment. In Outdoor mode, the side switch steps through all the output levels, including an 8-lumen “Eco” mode that can run up to 140 hours.

Back to “Turbo”. In this mode with fully-charged batteries, Fenix claims an output of 1,000 lumens in Turbo and Strobe modes - and I believe it! This little light is incredibly bright, and while Turbo will cut way back on your battery life it certainly has obvious tactical applications. The Strobe mode has the desired disorienting effect on anyone on the receiving end. You don’t always need all all those high-energy photons, though, and the output options in both Tactical and Outdoor modes provide a perfect balance of light vs. battery life for the task at hand.

The quality of the light is what I’ve come to expect from Fenix - well-made and durable. I have had very positive customer service experiences with Fenix, and never hesitate to recommend their products to friends and family. I passed the PD35TAC around among a group of LEOs and my security staff at a recent large event in upstate NY, and all were impressed. Most were disappointed in their own lights when they compared brightness and beam patterns against the lights they were carrying.

The PD35TAC is available right now for less than $75 directly from Fenix, along with a long list of accessories, batteries, and chargers to round out the product. For more information or to purchase, go to https://www.fenixlighting.com/product/pd35-tactical-edition-fenix-flashlight/
