A day with the chatterbait

While looking through my tackle, it's a rainy, cold winter day today and I'm bored, I came across two badly beat up z man chatterbaits and it took me back to warmer days and catching bass. Back in the early summer my son and I took the kayaks to a local oxbow lake for some largemouth bass fishing. My son is 12 and while a good fisherman, he does much better when throwing a bait that does not require a lot of concentration or detailed/complicated retrieves. Now I know that sounds a bit harsh but it's really not, he is perfectly capable of working a carolina rigged worm or finessing a drop shot lure but the reality is that he has much more fun when able to just chunk and reel. I'll admit, that some days I fall into this category as well. That is where the chatterbait really shines.

We spent the day paddling down a stretch of bank lined with boat docks and we just wore the bass out throwing nothing but the chatterbait, spinnerbaits and swim jigs. My son threw the chatterbaits exclusively. The great thing that I have found about the z man chatterbait is it can be worked by just reeling back in a steady retrieve, bounced like a traditional bass jig or used like a swim jig. We both used the swim jig technique to bag most of our bass that day. Working the boat docks and pulling in some nice chunky bass.

The Z Man chatterbait is easy to use and works very well. I would also add that I rarely have a short strike or miss a hit with this bait. It hooks up very well and bass seem to hit it to eat it.

Now the bad. Well,, there's not much. Weedless would be a nice feature but I understand that would probably affect the great hook up percentage. The price is also a bit of a negative for me. I can buy 2 swim jigs for the price of 1 chatterbait.

Overall I really like this lure and make sure I always have a few in my tackle bag.

Z-man Project Z Chatterbait

I am relatively new to the chatterbait scene, but so far I am loving the Z-man options. This review will be about the Z-man Project Z chatterbait. Z-man brought their first chatterbait to market about 10 years ago, and not much has changed since then. This is the follow up to that original chatterbait. They changed the head, the hook, and the colors available. The one thing that didn't change was the unique blade shape. That blade is what gives the Z-man chatterbait it's unique action.

The bait starts chattering on the very first turn of the handle. It also deflects pretty good off of obstructions with just a very slight pause in the chattering. The bait keeper is also very well thought out and works very well. It is a double barb design and definitely keeps the plastic pinned on. The skirt material is also very tough and no worries about pieces pulling out.

If you like chatterbaits, do yourself a favor and take a look at the Z-man Project Z chatterbait!
