After a recent conversation about installing some rod holders on a friend’s kayak, I realized that we may have done an article or two on YakAngler about a specific rod holder but never a series on the different options available.  There is a crazy amount of options out there so I thought that I would at minimum break it down to Scotty and Ram mounts.   See below for some options that you have when choosing Scotty Rod Holders.

Let me throw a quick disclaimer in here.  I am not listing all of the bases and rod holders that Scotty makes as I feel that some of the ones that I’m leaving out are better suited for other crafts than a kayak.

Side_DeckBasic Scotty Mounts

Side / Deck Mounts - Can be mounted on top or side of gunnel.  For all Scotty post mount rod holders.  To use the new Scotty "lock-down" mount system simply choose the best direction to fish from and insert the rod holder or accessory, pushing the post straight down into the mount.

Flush_mountFlush Mounts - Sealed base for watertight applications (such as kayak decks).
For all Scotty post mount rod holders.big253Gimballineart_000

Gimbal Mounts - Allows the use of Scotty rod holders with factory installed flush
mounted rod holders.

Basic Scotty Rod Holders

A slot in the front of the rod holder allows for a spinning reel to be securely held in position. The rod holder design has a side mounted flange, which leaves the bottom open. This allows for the rod holder to 265_corraccommodate trigger grips. Pistol
grip rod butts easily clear the sides of the rod holder for quick rod retrieval. Rod can be secured in holder with a soft latching strap which snaps over the top.

Fly Rod Holder - Innovative compact design, Allows hands free trolling with a fly rod. Fully adjustable and includes a safety strap.350_wRod

A Few Rod Holder Extra’s and Accessories

256_TripleRodHolder_wPowerLTriple Rod Holder - Manufactured from super tough fibre reinforced engineering grade nylon, this triple rod holder system is the best choice of anything on the market. It has a handy tool and lure rack to keep things organized and can swivel 360 degrees as well as each rod holder can swivel 360 degrees and tilt for ultimate versatility.

259_HeightExtender_rodholderRod Holder Extender - Increase your odds with easier access to your rod and reel. Extends the height of the rod holder by 6 1/2”, allowing for faster access when that fish strikes. Made from super tough re-enforced nylon.

459_length_MDAdjustable Rod Holder Extender - Provides the option for you to position your Scotty Rod Holder into that perfect fishing fighting location. Conveniently position your rod holder closer to you on your kayak or your downrigger to eliminate reaching for your rod.  Extends the height of the rod holder by 6 1/2"

I hope that this helps give you a basic understanding of some of the products that Scotty offers to us kayak anglers.  When it comes to Kayak fishing there are many options for kayak rigging so we recommend checking out multiple options before mounting anything.
