Crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass are the main tickets right now using crank baits, plastic craws, and small tube jigs. Shallow areas that are warmed by the sun attract some of the smaller fish, which in turn brings in the “fatties” that I like to catch and release from the kayak. I have caught many largemouth bass in the 4lb-5lb range already this season. The crappie bite is strong, with catches in the 8”-13” range. The bluegills are a bit shy yet, with an occasional eight-incher being caught. Be careful out there on the ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams, and remember that the water is still very cold. Always dress to swim!
