January 3, 2011 I met with Rusty at Snook Haven. Snook Haven is a place I have never visited in my 32 years here in Sarasota. Just a short 30min drive south to Venice, Fl you will find this great park located on the Myakka River. Snook Haven has much to offer, boat & canoe rentals, and tours on the river, food and most important fishing.

Rusty and I launched around 9Am and headed down the river. The first hook up was a lower slot Redfish. It wasn’t long after that Rusty hooked one of the thousand river monsters that we had been seeing rolling on the surface. After a long battle Rusty finally landed himself a large Gar. We continued down the river floating with the outgoing tide catching a few small Snook and enjoying the scenery.

It seemed that ever bend there was a gator sunning on the bank. If you find yourself in the Venice area, look up Snook Haven. This will be a place to visit very often for me.
