As the winter months draw near and the cold weather is the unfortunate result, many YAK Angler attempt to find things to do to keep us busy. For the rest of us that can't wait for the warmth of spring to get back out on the water I thought that I would share some cold water fishing tips with you. Below is a video by Jim Sammons (who is quickly becoming the unofficial spokesperson for our sport), to explain a little more about cold water fishing.
Things to remember when going out in the cold water:
Carry all standard safety and first aid items
Always wear you PFD
Stick to water conditions that you know and feel comfortable with
Never go alone in cold conditions
Never paddle our further than you are used to going
Know how to get back into your kayak (see video below)
Wear layered clothing
never wear cotton
Wear a wading belt if you choose to wear breathable wadders
Wear a warm hat and gloves
Wear Neoprene booties
Most importantly just use your head and make smart decisions.

Thanks for these tips. What about wearing a dry suit? With a life vest, and being a strong swimmer, if I had a dry suit with thermal gear underneath and a floatation vest, I would feel pretty comfortable by myself.
