You might be asking yourself “Boondoggle - what the heck is a Boondoggle?” By definition, a Boondoggle is an unnecessary or wasteful project or activity. Our definition is slightly different. The Kayak Fishing Boondoggles are gatherings of kayak fishers who come from across the country to paddle new locations, fish, meet new people, and tell bigger fish stories.
The official start of the Boondoggle is Friday, February 15, but expect many anglers to arrive a couple days early. Everyone asks about a schedule or calendar of events. We’ve always tried to keep the Boondoggle relaxed, without planned events. As the get-togethers have grown in popularity and size, we realized that a basic schedule is needed so people know what to expect.
- Many of the early birds will be fishing the waters surrounding KARS Park. Friday evening (6pm-ish) there will be a meet and greet/safety meeting at the main pavilion. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be cooked by KARS for a fee, and they will have $1 beers all weekend long.
- Fish the waters around KARS Park. Saturday evening, we will have the kids raffle around 4pm, and the Sonny’s BBQ dinner will start at 5:30pm ($10 adults $5 kids). After dinner, we will hold the main door prize giveaways.
- Fishing the waters of the NMZ again. Sunday evening, we will have a potluck dinner (please bring something if you plan to participate).
- Most folks will pack up from the long weekend and head home.
