I caught a sturgeon about 18 years ago quit by surprise. Fishing off the beach at the mouth of the Delaware Bay on the Delaware side at Cape Henlopen State Park. It was about mid day and we had been on the beach for a few hours, the kids were playing in the surf and I had a rod in a holder with a piece of old squid soaking. We were getting ready to leave when the rod started to strip line. It took a while to land and I thought I must have a large ray. It sure was different to see a per-historic critter rise in the surf and wash in with the next wave.

I didn't even know that sturgeon were living in the Delaware Bay, but after inquiring come to find out that in the 1700's there was a large commercial fishery. They even shipped caviar to Russia.

Checked Off My List,
