Hi, Guys!

After years fishing from a canoe, I got to the point that it was too much hassle to load/unload the heavy canoe (plus, getting too old for it):

I "traded it in" for an AdvancedElements inflatable kayak:

That worked great until it developed leaks in the tube and bottom that were problematic to patch.

So, I've finally gone full-kayak, buying this Perception Sonoma on Craigslist for $320:

I'll probably have a lot of questions.

Thanks,

Al

Welcome!

Having used all three I would bet you will be thrilled at how well the kayak performs in windy conditions. Much less effort to move and track straight.

Well I had a shakedown cruise and caught a nice cutthroat on the second cast.

Came back through some wind, and it was indeed a big improvement over the inflatable.

Then I put on my wetsuit (Big Lagoon, CA. Cold water) and tried tipping near shore. It was easier to tip than I'd expected. I discovered that there's no way I would have been able to self-rescue. I need to find a way to add some flotation.

welcome aboard!

Have you practiced any self rescue techniques?

First off, learn to roll.

then learn recovery. there are several different ones but again, they all take practice.
