Has anyone used one of those kayak hoist systems? I had one given to me, but I am afraid the straps might deform the heavy hull of my Hobie Outback.

Has anyone used one? Are my worries unfounded?

I actually have 2 different setups. My Kaku Wahoo 12.5 is stored with a strap system, up against the wall of my garage. 2 straps run underneath and are affixed to the cinder block wall with 2 hooks anchored into the wall. I have been storing it this way for about a year, without any signs of warp-age. Before that, I had a different kayak in the same storage config, and never saw any problem with it, either.

My 2nd setup is for my canoe. She weighs about 100 pounds and I have her suspended off the garage ceiling, utilizing 2 deer gambrel hoist setups that I THINK I got at Harbor Freight. Hunters use these to hang deer while skinning and dressing. I have 2 - 2x4s with eye bolts, hanging from the gambrels. The canoe sits, upside down, laying on top of each of these 2x4s. Both ropes from their pulleys come together, and are tied of to a marine cleat, mounted on the wall in front of the canoe, between both garage doors. Without the pulley system of the gambrels, I was not able to hoist the canoe by myself. With the reduction supplied by the pulleys, I am able to manage it by myself.

I think that cabelas hoist is the same one that was given to me. I think I might give it a try.

I have my Cuda 12 on a lift that looks the same. I got it a Dicks Sporting for about $35, works fine. I did use a 2 x 6 to span 2 roof joist at each end to spread the load vs screwing directly into one joist on each end. It may be over kill but the inertia load when pulling up the yak concerned me more the resting load while in storage. Not sure if I'd try it with a ProAngler.

Mine is simple and works great. I can drop it right into the bed of the truck:
