I've heard many of you talk about it on KFR, No Bananas! So does the superstition go for just Bananas or anything related to bananas, like Banana Boat Sunscreen or Banana flavored lip balm?

What other fishing / kayaking superstitions do you guys have?

I don't like to fish if the winds out of the East. That usually means a high pressure system in KY, I don't know if that's why I catch so few fish with an east wind, but I can't remember ever having a good day on the water with an east wind.

My other superstition is No Music on board when fishing!

nothing that has banannas whatsoever, dog bisuits-only milkbones, every other brand attracts the damn dog sharks.

Boy...the first time that I heard about bananas on a ship (kayak) was at the Charleston Boondoggle when Marian and I had a shore lunch and she took out a couple of bananas out of the cooler for a dessert. Boy did we receive a ration of s&(t from the folks at the little island.

Being an old Wingnut I never had heard such a old wives tale. Who knows if it is true or not. After the bananas were eaten I started catching some fish.

the reason for the bad voodoo, is back in the day when ships would carry banannas back to europe, when a ship would go down all that would be floating after wards where bananas. also when they picked the bananas they didn't look thru them, unfortunetely. because there is a spider called a bananna spider...now i have been shot at, blown up and drank the water in tijauna, but them damn things are big and nasty and scare me more then the afforementioned things. so hence the superstitions.

here are a few others;it is bad luck to set sail on a friday(its the day christ was crucified)
if a sailor hears church bells at sea then the ship is doomed
dolphins following a ship will protect the ship and its crew
a wrenns feather, plucked on new years day and worn in a single braid constitutes a sailors luck and prosperity

Ooops! I'll just make sure I keep a proper distance from ya! I don't always play music when fishing, but I do a lot. Couldn't stand to wear the ear buds because I always felt someone was sneaking up on me and I wouldn't hear them. Hence the reason for the external speakers for my Ipod. I don't blast the music by any means. But I must say there are times when a good tune while on the water soothes my soul.

Okay, a superstition from my dad...

To catch a fish, spit on your bait before casting it. He used to do that all the time. I have NO idea where he came up with it. And no, I'm not in the habit of spitting on my lures or flies. (though I will occasionally spit on a big ol' nightcrawler before I throw it as a joke to my friends who know the story).

Hey my Grandpa Illg on my mom's side and my Dad would say the same thing. If that did not work Dad would say "Here Fishy Fishy". And if that did not work something about adding a little of the "Barley Pop" to the water would work as well. Hey they always caught fish.
