Wavewalk W700

This will seem a self-serving review because I am the north central/western Wavewalk dealer. I am 63 and have had two lumbar disk surgeries and currently weigh 265lbs. I am now retired as a biologist/herpetologist. I wanted to get back to fishing and quiet times on the water in addition to introducing my grandchildren to the same. Some time ago, I actually did a Google search for "Kayak for Bad Backs" and the Wavewalk website was one of the search results. Perused the website (Wavewalk.com) and soon after I drove to the coast and tried out a Wavewalk at the eastern NC dealer http://fishingkayaks-nc.com/

Amazing, I could get in the W500 DRY! and paddle in an upright position, stand as needed, adjust leg position as needed and the get out dry. Soon after I bought one just as Wavewalk debued the W700. This new model is everything the 500 is X2. You will not believe how stable AND easy it is to paddle. You can set it up with elec or small gas outboards (gas

Wavewalk 500

I really loved this kayak at first and thought it was the solution to stand up fishing in a kayak. Unfortunatly after about 18 months all four corners were the pontoons and the saddle meet had split under the pressure of splaying. The manufacturer than came out with a product called a saddle bracket which kept the pontoons from splaying. I had to use one on the front and the back or else my kayak would completly fall apart. This greatly reduced the stability. I had motorized this kayak but with the loss in stability I was no longer comfortable doing that as it feels very tippy. More recently the center ribs started cracking right up the middle of the saddle. On cracked than I fixed it and the next one cracked. All this in a litlle over 3 years. I made a video about the repairs on youtube. Just search wavewalk review and repairs

Wavewalk 500 Review

I really enjoyed this kayak at first because of the ease of stand up fishing and all the modifications you could make. I found it very stable until the first failure I had where the poontons actually spilt on all four corners where the hulls attach to the saddle. The manufacturer sent me saddle brackets to keep the kayak from completly splitting in 2 but the brackets reduced the stability signifacantly and added unecesary weight and block hull tip access.
After that the actual saddle itself split right down the middle. Following a manufacturer suggested repair, the next gusset split. Now I wonder how much longer before the next failure. I made a short video about the problems and repairs.

Not so great

First off, I am not one to go out and bash a product, but this kayak was a big disappointment for me. I wanted to like it so much and invested a lot of drive time and effort to get one. Everyone talked about its stability and comfort, I found out neither were true for me. I COULD NOT STAND IN THIS THING FOR THE LIFE OF ME! (I'm not a big guy) I have stood and fished in 6 or so different models of kayaks without falling off so I don't believe this is a balance problem. Native, perception, wilderness, crescent, and ascend where all much more stable and easier to fish out of than this. Turning in tight area's is terrible, and don't even think about taking it out with a cross wind or you'll end up on the other side of the bay. I left it on the bank in the Florida heat for about 3hrs one afternoon, the surface was uneven and ended up tweaking the hull once it cooled down. I had to leave it in the driveway on a flat surface in the sun to get it back into the proper shape. The draft is around 3in more than my fully loaded gheenoe with a 25hp. I mean I was dragging bottom in areas I kayak frequently and never touched bottom before. I know people like these things, but I had an absolutely terrible experience with it. I hope it was just a fluke.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
It looks cool
Cons:
Almost Everything Else
