Perception "Pescador Pilot"

Kayak Make & Model

Brand:
Pelican
Model:
Pescador Pilot
MSRP ($):
1,799.00
Length (ft):
12.5

The Pescador range from Perception Kayaks should be well known to anglers and the Pilot is the newest member of the lineup. The name derives from the Pilot Drive pedal system and according to Perception the purpose of this kayak is to deliver big performance without the associated big price tag.

Thanks to the Pilot Drive this is a kayak that enables you to cruise all day without much effort. The Pilot also features Turbo Flaps for noise reduction, which has the added benefit of keeping turbulence under the kayak to a minimum too. Thanks to the Quick Key, it is easy to launch or dock the Pilot and the drive is lightweight enough that it can be stored inside a recess in the hull while it is not in use.

Like most pedal kayaks the Pilot allows for forward and reverse motion and thanks to its low-profile rudder steering control it is also able to deliver a very tight turning radius. This makes it perfect for anglers who want to get into hard to reach places for the best catch. Obviously none of this would matter if the kayak wasn’t comfortable to sit in for extended periods, but the Pilot avoids this issue with its captain’s Chair that offers plenty of adjustability. The Pilot has bow storage pods, with a transducer scupper, to safely tuck away your electronics and other gear along with bow and stern tankwells. The two YakAttack GearTracs takes the hassle out of mounting more accessories and the four molded-in rod holders provides ample space for your fishing rods.

Although the Pescador Pilot only launched late in 2016, it is already making waves as one of the most affordable pedal drive kayaks that caters to anglers.

Very Good Kayak!!

This has been an great kayak. We couldn't be more happy! Perception (who also makes Wilderness) makes a very good product and this boat is no exception. Stability ratings on kayaks varies from one person to another but at 33.75" wide I can throw a cast net from this boat (it took some practice but I can do it). Love the pedal drive! I believe in previous models the Pilot had some issues but those have been resolved. Ours has worked flawlessly. If I wouldn't get sick I would take this BTB without hesitation. For the money this is by far (IMO) the best kayak you can get.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
Very fast & stable! One of a kind hull design. The seat is really comfortable and easily adjustable. The pedal drive is easily raised and leans forward out of the way for shallow water. Propeller stays hidden when drive is raised which is huge for me!
Cons:
Rod Holders. The boat comes with 4 holes but are too big to actually hold a rod. The method of raising and lowering the rudder doesn't work really well but it does function.

Great Kayak!

I would buy again. This has been working out better than I thought it would. I packed my drive with marine grade/saltwater resistant grease as soon as I got it. Hardware is of high grade across the platform. It is sea worthy! Just be smart about it.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
Got it on sale for $1,499, great for holding trolling speeds all day, adaptable platform, very comfertable seat, thoughtful layout and ergonomics, , set up for easy install/removal of fish finders, very easy to work on.
Cons:
Needs dual handles on the rear and stock rod holders needed Yak Gear Upgrade. Easy to fix.
