Prowler Trident 13 Review

The Trident 13 was the second kayak that I had purchased and my first Sit-on-Top (SOT). To be quite honest when I first started fishing from a kayak and really looking into the boats that were out there I just kept getting pulled back to Ocean Kayak.

As I would search the other forums, prior to starting YakAngler.com, I was amazed with all the guys that were so creative when rigging their Ocean Kayaks. Jim Sammons and Kayak Kevin were also influencers, sharing with me their enthusiasm for Ocean Kayak.

So I purchased my Ocean Kayak Trident 13 (T13) from the local Bass Pro Shop in January following a bonus check that I had received from work.

Being that there was snow on the ground, and I don’t have a garage, my wife was kind enough to let me park it in the living room so that I could do a few basic modifications to it. Right off the bat I installed a Humming bird fish finder and a no-drill anchor trolley.

I’ve fished out of the T13 for almost 2 years now and here are my opinions of this boat:

Likes:

I think that this kayak is very well thought out for the kayak angler, from the battery bag, rod pod, recessed scupper hole for the hummingbird transducer, and Sonar shield.

This boat tracks well and has a good speed.

It is stable enough to stand and fish from.

It was reasonably priced at just under $1,000

Dislikes:

I think that my dislikes come mainly from the type of fishing that I do here in Kentucky.

We don’t do surf launches here so I rarely use my rod pod to actually store rods. Instead I cut a rectangle Coca-Cola crate and stuffed it inside the pod. I use this to store extra tackle in smaller Plano boxes.

The keel, while it is nice to have in open water, sucks when drifting down a small creek or river. There have been multiple times when in swift current I struggle to correct the kayak due to the keel catching the current.

The side handles seem to be notorious for breaking. While this hasn’t happened to my kayak, I know that it happened to Isaac’s and Mark’s. Actually Mark’s broke when I was loading in onto my trailer, sorry bro.

Overall I give this boat 4.2 out of 5. It would probably get a higher score if I fished the salt more but due to the fact that I’m inland it gets a bass angler’s point of view.

Newport Beach, Ca. Fishing Kayak

This is an older Prowler 13 Ocean Kayak I purchased it new. I am lucky enough to be able to average going out usually five days a week, sunrise to 8:00 and have over 1,200 morning trips on it. This is a very stable kayak in the bay and in the ocean. I leave it on the beach and just pull it out every morning. The kayak's surface has held up well as I wash it out after each use. I highly recommend this Kayak and hope to get a few thousand trips on it.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
Stable easy paddling kayak.
Cons:
Have not found one yet.

Ocean Kayak Trident 13

The Trident 13 was my first kayak. After doing lots of research online and looking at kayaks in local big box stores, I ordered the Trident 13 online and have it shipped. Even though I had not demo'd it, I have been extremely happy with the kayak and love being on the water in it.

The Trident is very easy to paddle and tracks extremely well. It comes ready to hit the water, just add rod/reel and a paddle. While the kayak doesn't have factory installed track systems for mounting accessories, the factory options are very easy to work with. The Ocean Kayak 'Mod Pod' is ready to add RAM mounts and other Scotty accessories and has pre-drilled holes ready to accept most aftermarket options. There is plenty of room to add rails/track systems if you desire.

The Trident 13 is very maneuverable, despite being a longer kayak. The hull design allows it to both turn well and track well.

My chief complaints with the kayak are in it's instability while trying to stand and more impressionable hull material. Smaller individuals with good balance will be able to pull off standing up in the Trident, while taller/larger individuals will find the Trident 13 extremely difficult to stand in. The plastic that Ocean Kayak uses in the Trident 13 keeps it light, however, if left sitting in the sun or heat on a hard or uneven surface, it can warp slightly or distort to the surface it's sitting on.

Overall, the Trident 13 is an excellent kayak and Ocean Kayak has done a fantastic job at offering a ready-to-go kayak out of the box at a sub-$1000 price tag. If standing up in the kayak is a big requirement for you, I highly recommend demoing a Trident before making the purchase.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
Easy to paddle, tracks extremely well, good in light waves/choppy water
Cons:
Too narrow to easily stand up, dedicated electronics area is too far forward
