Newb Fly Tying 2

The addiction to fly tying has taken hold.  I am very lucky and blessed to have some great friends teach me and provide some products.  After chatting with a co-worker I tried to tie some more flies using less and shorter hair.  They turned out ok, but still didn’t look that good.  I shared these with my co-worker and he offered to teach me a new pattern and some basics after school.

So the next day we met and he taught me how to tie a gurgler.  Along with learning what goes into it I learned some great basics!  As in, how to start the thread on a hook, how to do half hitch knots, along with many other tips and tricks about handling thread, hair, etc.

After that lesson I couldn’t wait to get back to the bench.   Saturday couldn’t get here soon enough.  Well, thankfully work came and went and then time to tie.  I tied 3 different sizes of gurglers and then one streamer with a dumbell eye.  The gurglers were pretty easy, but the dumbell eye gave me a little trouble.  Overall it worked out and I hope it’ll catch something.

>So what should I tie next?

Although starting to kayak fish in the summer of 2012 Spencer has fished since he was a kid.  He fishes everything from small creeks to large lakes mainly targeting large and smallmouth bass, northerns, and anything he can convince to bite the hook.  When he is not on the water he teaches choir at a middle and high school and teaches private piano lessons, and composes music. Spencer also loves working out and helping folks get healthy and fit!  He lives in Neenah with his lovely wife, 2 dogs, and 4 cats.
