Which Derby Do You Participate In?

Back in 2009, I was just getting  into kayak fishing, my new found hobby.  Other than catching a few SM Bass that were the 1st fish that I targeted and caught in the kayak I hadn't really thought of targeting other species.  The 1st Kayak Fishing forum I had joined in September of 2008, was Yakfisher.net who ran their "CPR Virtual Derby" where you submitted fishing reports of Freshwater Species that you had caught and received points for the largest fish from 1 to 10 in each species category.  Later in 2009 I joined Canadiankayakanglers.com and also participated in their "AOTY Online Derby".  The CKA format was a little different but between the 2 Online Derbies I was now researching other species to target and where to catch them.

I will have to credit the online derbies for helping me to become a competent multi species angler.  It will motivate you to get out as soon as the ice thaws (for us northerners) and help create goals of which species to target and learn when and where to fish for them.

This is the time of year that most of us Freshwater Kayak Anglers are looking to attend Fishing Shows, maybe buy a new kayak, change some rigging, purchase new electronics, or add some new fishing gear.  Try and find an online derby to participate in. Most will get started in February or March.

Kayak Wars

The most popular and well known Derby is Kayak Wars where you assemble a team of 3 to 5 anglers that can be from anywhere in the region that you are selecting to fish in.  Kayak Wars was originally a Saltwater competition and a few years ago added a Freshwater Division.  Last year was my 1st year in Kayak Wars and I joined a team where the other 4 members I had never met before.  Throughout 2012 I ended up meeting and fishing with all but 1 of them and we finished 8th overall out of 40 teams. We fished out of the North Central Region.

The 2013 Kayak Wars Derby opens for registration on January 16th, when you can start assembling your teams. The Derby will run from February 1st to December 14th.  I encourage any Kayak Angler to try and assemble a team, you don't have to know your teammates or ever meet them, but it will help to motivate you to get out and fish not only your favorite species but others as well.

Kayak Angling Online Derbies

I will post other Freshwater online derbies over the next few weeks with brief descriptions from;

Richard Ofner

Richard Ofner started fishing in the fall of 2008 from a kayak, targeting all freshwater species. He has fished all over the Great Lakes Region from Lake Michigan, Lake Superior to the French River,  and Bay of Quinte in Eastern Ontario. Taking advantage of all the opportunities Southwestern Ontario has to offer, Richard seeks out trophy Muskie, Walleye and Bass which can all be caught minutes away from where he lives.  The last few years Richard has ventured into Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas participating in several Kayak Fishing Tournaments.

He has organized the Border City Classic, in Windsor, Ontario which has grown to become one of  the Great Lakes Region’s largest Kayak Fishing Events. It is also one of the Hobie World Qualifiers since 2014.

During the winter months where he can't get on the water he will do seminars, work fishing and boat shows, and write for blogs to help promote the areas vast resource of fishing opportunities and helping others to discover the sport of kayak fishing. Taking videos and pictures on the water of other people fishing in kayaks has also expanded into his kayak fishing experience.
As a Hobie Fishing Team Member you may see Richard out in one of his Mirage Driven Kayaks mainly targeting Walleye, Bass, and Muskie, and will travel a few hours to target Salmon, Trout, and Sturgeon.
