I rarely copy a story from another source but after reading this one I just had to share. We here at YakAngler have been following the Asian Carp situation for a while now and are happy to report that there is atleast one company out there thinking outside of the box. Check out the following to see how one company may help jump start a new fishing industry.
Washington officals met Monday to discuss the long and short term plans to keep the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes. Below are two of the short term plans along with the link to the full document.
2.1.1 Targeted Removal within Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS)
Workgroup: MRR
Lead Agency: Rapid Response Team (IL DNR, USFWS, USACE, USCG, etc.)
Estimated Funding: $2,000,000
Funding Source: Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monies
In an effort to control the spread of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes, officials will be meeting in Washington D.C. to so discuss various control measures.
As we have previously discussed in such articles as The Great Asian Carp Invasion and A Case of Self Defense the danger of this very invasive species entering the Great Lakes is reaching its pentacle. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Judy Biggert led a bipartisan forum about how to control the expansion of these carp. This “carp summit” as it has been called was a precursor to the White House Summit set for February 8th at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
As we recently discussed in a previous article “The Great Asian Carp Invasion” , there is a very severe threat of Asian Carp making their way into the Great Lakes by way of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC). In an effort to prevent a potentially heavy blow to the Great Lakes Commercial fishing industry, Michigan is suing the State of Illinois to close the CSSC.
Last week the Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently decided to dump 2,200 gallons of the toxin rotenone into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC). This toxic dump was done in an attempt to keep the very invasive species of Asian Carp out of the great Lakes.
