As I sit here thinking about what to write about, the leaves changing color outside remind me about some recent posts I’ve read on some forums concerning YakAngling in colder water and an experience I had during my first season in a kayak.  Where I’m not going to cover specific safety and dry gear except for your PFD, and your better be wearing it. What I’m going to talk about getting back into your kayak when you end up in the water after playing turtle, specifically deep water re-entries or self rescues.

I recently upgraded my Personal Flotation Device (PFD). The vest I had wasn’t really made for kayak fishing in a sit-on-top. It was uncomfortable to wear, so I would just toss it in the back of the kayak to meet the legal requirements….not something I should be doing. As a pro staff writer/public figure, every photo of me in the kayak SHOULD show me wearing a PFD, and I apologize for my irresponsibility in regards to that.

Walking around ICAST a lot of products certainly caught my. As I walked past the VestPac booth I noticed a man wearing something interesting looking around his chest. I approached Paul, the guy wearing the device, and ask about the product. He walked me through his demonstration; and I had to admit that I could certainly see where this could come in handy.

So you have just purchased your new Kayak and are ready to head out and catch the fish of a life time. You have bought a paddle maybe a PFD, hopefully at the advice of the place where you bought your kayak and you are ready to go get em’… Right?

As winter quickly approaches and being that my last pair of breathable waders was stolen a couple of months ago by some jerk that decided to loot our campsite.  I recently purchased the White River Fly Shop Pocket Front Breathable Stocking-Foot Waders.     I’ve been out several times now in them and wanted to share my review.

I have noticed that the world of fishing although somewhat accommodating doesn’t host as many selections for women’s gear as it does for males. That said I am not naive to the fact that it is a male dominated recreation. None the less, I do enjoy fishing. I have learned to adjust. For example, I now know what size shoe I wear in men’s. Men have a wider selection in everything fishing. This is also the case when it comes to personal floatation devices.

I have been using the MTI Solaris F Spec PFD for the past few weeks, overall I have been very impressed with how well thought out its features are and its overall comfort.  The F Spec stands for “Fishing Specification” this vest was designed from the ground up with the fisherman in mind.

Fishing the inshore saltwater grass flats and passes of the Tampa Bay area may seem easy and harmless, which it can be. Of course I've never been one to just settle for the easy things so I sometimes find myself at the mouth of the Bay grouper fishing in deep water, around Johns Pass or Clearwater Pass, or the always popular Fort Desoto...all of which offers the opportunity to find yourself swept out to sea by an outgoing tide, storm or wind.
