A few years back I had the privilege of meeting Bob Jenkins the owner of Local Hooker Rods, a small rod company based out of Cape Cod, Mass. I had yet to fish with a Local Hooker Rod up until this point but I was interested in talking with him about his product. One of the first things I noticed about Bob was his passion for fishing and building a top quality fishing rod at a fair price. It is very hard to compete with the BIG companies like Shimano, Penn, St. Croix, ect... but Bob has taken them all on and has shown that his rods are here to stay. With a Limited Lifetime Warranty and great customer service Bob has put together rods for just about every kind of fishing you can think of, from fishing for bass to tuna there is a Local Hooker Rod for everyone.  I got a chance to interview Bob via the net and here is what he had to say!

Charles Levi Jr. (YA) Thank you Bob for taking the time to talk with me.

(YA) What made you start your company?

Bob Jenkins (BJ)
9-11 I was on the 39th floor of the World Trade Center tower one when the first plane hit the building….   Needed a new career..

(YA) Where did you come up with the name?

(BJ) Although many explorers and fishermen had sailed our waters in the 1500s, Bartholomew Gosnold is credited with the "European discovery" of New England decades later. He named this great coast "Cape Cod" and made note in his logbooks about the plentiful fish that pestered his ship.  Fishing has always been featured prominently in our history and fortunes. The fate of Cape Cod has always been linked to the sea. For centuries the local men in search of a livelihood have turned to the waters around Cape Cod.
These fishermen are also known as “hookers”...

(YA) Is it hard to keep the rods American made?

(BJ) No, but people need to understand what going into a well build rod! If I were to go buy four new Yokohama, Perelli or Michelin tires for my car and not balance them, no matter how good the brand name is, they’d start to bump and wear out fast.  They’d not be worth a hoot!  Well made rods are the same.  Good components are only as good as the way they are made!

(YA) If you had to pick one game fish to target for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

(BJ) Reds and Trout, they are relaxing and easy to get to in a yak or any small boat.  Anyone can fish these fish and with the right equipment have a great time!

(YA) Favorite place to fish?

(BJ) I have several!  But inshore, Mosquito lagoon.  I had the privilege of fishing with Scott Tripp and was blown away!

(YA) Are you a part of any fishing Clubs?

(BJ) Cape Cod Salties, Hyannis Anglers Club, and Wet Dream Fishing Team.

(YA) Your thoughts on kayak fishing?

(BJ) I have seen a big growth in the sport, from inshore to a guy off Cape Cod taking a 200lb tuna last year!  It’s fun, exciting and affordable!

(YA)
I want to thank you for your time Bob and best of luck in the years to come.

After fishing with a Local Hooker Rod I am even more impressed with what Bob and the Local Hooker team has created. I fish ten pound braid and need a rod that can cast a mile but yet have the backbone to set a hook as well, these rods do both very well. What a difference it makes and what a true joy it is fish with great tackle. Here is a picture of a monster redfish taken on a Local Hooker rod.
