Review: Icom “M24 Float ‘N Flash” VHF Radio

I’ve had the chance to use a lot of different types and styles of radio equipment in my 30+ years of Amateur (“ham”), aviation, and other radio activities. Icom gear has always been top shelf in terms of quality, reliability, and ease of operation. In addition to their amateur, commercial and aviation lines, Icom also makes marine radio gear. The newest addition to their handheld VHF radio line is the Icom “M24 Float ‘N Flash”, which lives up in every way to my expectations for Icom’s high standards.

Review: Standard Horizon HX751 Radio

After reading Isaac Miller’s review of the Uniden “Atlantis” VHF marine radio, I decided to share my dramatically different experience with my Standard Horizon HX751. I purchased my radio two seasons ago for around $150. It has accompanied me nearly every time I have ventured out on my kayak. I consider a VHF radio an important part of my safety equipment and although I have not yet had to use it in an emergency, I do feel good knowing it is there and having confidence it will work.

Review: Uniden Atlantis VHF Marine Radio

When you're on the water, other boats can present hazards for kayak fisherman.  They can also be a lifeline.  Cell phones are great when you find yourself in a hairy situation, but they don't always work.  That's where the VHF radio comes in.  It allows for on-the-water communication with other boats on the water, the Coast Guard, and you can also get weather information in case you don't notice the storm moving in on your location.

Standard Horizon HX851 VHF Radio

As is my normal Sunday evening, I’m sitting here in front of my computer surfing the web looking for stories relating to kayak fishing for YakAngler.  I stumbled across this video of Jim Sammons talking about the importance of communications while out on the water kayak fishing and it made me realize that we haven’t done many articles discussing this topic or even profiling any of these products.   As Jim mentions in the video below, a great option is the Standard Horizon HX851 VHF Radio.
