Review: YakAttack PanFish Portrait Photograph by Mark Watanabe

What’s better than showing all your fishing buddies that trophy fish you caught on you kayak? Showing them the trophy fish with your big grinning mug in the background too! So how I get my large dome and fish in the same HERO shot? The YakAttack PanFish Portrait.

A few months ago Luther Cifers sent us a grab bag of stuff from YakAttack’s line of kayak fishing accessories. We’ve already put the MightyMount and ParkNPole through its paces now for the PanFish Portrait.

The PanFish Portrait is such a simple piece of equipment; it does what it’s supposed to do, hold your camera for the perfect HERO shot. It’s a simple pivoting base with RAM camera mount; they come in both a Scotty and MightyMount compatible bases. I received option the MightyMount version that was easily installed with the provided hardware.

While on the water it’s easy to adjust your camera to the correct angle with the pivoting base and adjustable RAM camera mount. The PanFish Portrait is small enough to not get in the way while fishing. I don’t even notice mine until I need to use it.

I've never had any issues with it will paddling either, it's small footprint and low profile keep it out of the way of your paddle strokes.

So did I have any complaints about the PanFish Portrait? Unfortunately I have one, every other YakAttack product I’ve used floats… The PanFish Portrait doesn’t. I contacted Luther about it and he said.

"There are just so many RAM parts on it and so little room for foam that it can't float. I originally thought (hoped) it would, it is what it is. We've never had an "everything must float" philosophy, though we make floating products when we can."

There you have it, a simple, easy to use camera mount that stays out of the way and does it job well. It doesn’t float but neither does 80 percent of the other gear you carry in your kayak. I would recommend the YakAttack PanFish Portrait to anyone looking to get their mug into those trophy fish photos.
