Fighting Cold and Wind, is it Worth it?

My last two trips have been very tough due to cold temperatures and strong winds. These are conditions a lot of kayak fisherman try to avoid; I've been guilty of this myself. High winds definitely annoy me more than cold temperatures. Wind can really limit your presentations and make it next to impossible to keep boat position.

Kayak Fishing at 33 Degrees F

This adventure started with the concept of renting a couple of Kayaks in the Detroit Lakes, Minnesota area. The local marina had already started the process to dismantle the marina for the winter on Little Detroit Lake. So some serious internet searching for available rentals for mid-October had to be done.

Kayak Fishing Lake George pt. 1

Having grown up on Lake George this lake will always be a magical place in my mind. However, unlike so many childhood memories that rarely meet expectations when you try to relive them, Lake George has actually exceeded mine. Having spent time kayak fishing on this lake for the majority of the last 30 summers I have been able to watch this fishery and lake recover from overuse and in some cases abuse.

Floyds Fork Surprise

This past weekend Adam and I decided to fish Floyds Fork a tributary of the Salt River. Joining us was Adams buddy Kevin who had never fished from a kayak before. Our last time on the Fork wasn’t our best trip of the year; but was filled with excitement, some lost gear, and the realization that an Ocean Kayak Trident 13 isn’t the most nimble kayak in tight spaces…

Ice, Snow, Kayaks, and Smallmouth Bass

What do these four things have in common? Well...I don't know because i'm just a dumb kayak fisherman...not a philosopher

Thanks to a fellow winco's pro-staffer I located a "new to me" warm water discharge and hit the Susquehanna River this past Saturday in search of smallmouth bass.

Black Friday Kayak Bass

A couple fishing buddies and I decided to hit the water yesterday for some early winter smallmouth fishing on the Susquehanna River. We converged on the Susquehanna at about 7 a.m. prepared to fish a known wintering area that both Jeff and I had fished in the past. While other folks were standing in line outside their local "big box" store, we were unpacking our gear on the riverbank and dawned our cold weather gear for a day of fishing.

Smallmouth, wintering hole smack down

It was a great day of fishing with enough action to keep me warm even with the air temps dipping into the low 40's. The highlight of the trip was a 20" fat fall bronze back. Despite the cold water, the fish made several leaps and even cleared the water once before I could bring the fish to hand. The fish was a fitting exclamation to an action filled late fall trip.

Big Baits For Big Fish In The Fall

It's autumn throughout the Midwest. The leaves on trees are exploding in color, we're several games into the football season, some of the early migrating species of birds have left, and the fish want to get caught. Autumn is a great time to be on the water, it's a great time to catch numbers of fish, and, if you use bigger baits, it's a great opportunity to catch really big fish. Here's why the fish like bigger baits in the fall, and a couple of ideas for using bigger baits.

Fish Rivers In The Fall

Fall provides a lot of fishing opportunities. Most fish, whether they live in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, or ponds go on a bite in the autumn months. River fish can be especially susceptible to an angler this time of year. Here are some things you can do to get in on this angling excitement.

Drop Shot Basics Vol 1

So anyone who watches the Bass Master, FLW, or any other bass programs see people drop shot fishing and catching fish.  It has been around for awhile now, molding and shaping like all techniques into a bass catching mainstay. It is one of my personal favorites, I always have one rig tied onto my line at all time, here is how I work and use the drop shot rig.
