Okuma Fishing is releasing a new spinning reel this spring. The "Raw-II" utilizes their newest aluminum alloy - T480. High corrosion resistance, extreme strength, and light weight make this new alloy a dream. Okuma’s first Carbonite-greased dual drag system on a spinning reel and their already proven effective elliptical oscillation technology make this a reel a must-have for those that want to go kayak fishing after big fish without busting the bank or their gear.
YakAttack makes a full line of products that give you options on how you rig your kayak from day to day. I was given the YakAttack “Mighty Mount” to review, and it is now an essential part of my kayak angling arsenal.
Fishing bass during the spawn, in particular bedding bass - what a touchy subject! If you ask ten bass fishermen their thoughts, the answers will vary from “never” to “situation” to “always”, and the discussions on the subject sound like presidential debates. Let us delve into the “situation”. Why? Because this is the one I adhere to, and I am going to go over the thought process, baits, and what to look for.
I have had the opportunity to use many different monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided fishing lines. I use each type of line for their specific characteristics: mono when I want some stretch; fluoro for the “sink” and ability to be “invisible” in water; and braid for its sensitivity, strength, and durability. For the longest time I used “PowerPro” braid, then tried “Vicious” braid. I loved them both, but I have found the braid that for me now sets the standard - PowerPro’s new “Super 8 Slick”.
We had a great kayak fishing radio show, on wed. Special guest Luther Cifers of YakAttack talk to us about the line of kayak fishing products that YakAttack is coming out with and how they all came to be. very cool stuff. thanks again bud, check out YakAttack here.

Ah, sunglasses, one of the most pivotal aspects of kayak fishing. Not only do they help us see our quarry and the structure they hide in and around, but they protect our eyes from the sun and flying lures. I was given the opportunity to review the hobie bayside and I thought I would match them up against my costa Del mar wave killers. I “broke” each one down into pro and cons, let’s see how each stood out.
So you want to pour your own soft plastics, huh? Then this is where you need stay for the duration. So start off lets go over what you will need, (ya, I am jumping right into it so hold on yall)
“JINGLE DRAGS, JINGLE DRAGS, COWS ARE ON THEIR WAY, TIME TO BE AT KIPTOPEKE, WHERE WE EEL ALL DAY HEY” This is the song all Striper kayak fisherman hear in there merry heads after thunder chicken day “thanksgiving”. The water temps drop and the Stripers from the northern Atlantic merge with the “rockfish” from the northern bay at the concrete ships and the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT).
