Review: Stohlquist Getaway PFD

I recently upgraded my Personal Flotation Device (PFD). The vest I had wasn’t really made for kayak fishing in a sit-on-top. It was uncomfortable to wear, so I would just toss it in the back of the kayak to meet the legal requirements….not something I should be doing. As a pro staff writer/public figure, every photo of me in the kayak SHOULD show me wearing a PFD, and I apologize for my irresponsibility in regards to that.

2 Weeks And A 3 Day Bust

I haven’t been writing very much lately because, well there hasn’t been a lot to write about. Last week, the wind from Hurricane Irene made being on the water tumultuous at best and I’ve learned to trust my instincts when it comes to that and stayed off the water 25 knot winds aren’t conditions you should be in while kayak fishing.

One Of Those Dear Fly Rod Letters

I’ve never been good with words or saying I’m sorry. I’m not quite sure how to say this, so I’m just going to say it. Even though it’s hard for both of us, I’m sure that you’ll agree that it’s for the best.

Many Fishing Masks

One issue that I am very passionate about is sun protection, and I’m sure that you’ve educated yourself about the importance of protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. All kinds of health issues can arise related to sun exposure, not to mention the agony of sunburn. To me, sun protection is every bit as important as wearing your PFD and the lures and tackle that you’ll be using. Even though I live in one of the most hot, humid climates known to man, face protection is an important part of my sun protection arsenal.

The Rain Factor

Have you ever been bewildered by not finding fish where they should be, only to realize later, with a resounding “Duh!” where you went wrong?

Choosing The Right Kayak for You

One thing folks ask me quite a bit is “What’s the best kayak I should get?” Since the variables are so complex, there’s no simple, cut and dry answer. It’s almost like asking someone what sort of shoes to buy. I’m sure that any kayak fishing guide or pro angler will tell you to get the kayak that they use because, chances are, they’re on a kayak manufacturers pro staff and that’s what they’re supposed to do.

Big Uns Get The Ball Rolling

I’ll liken it to this: You’re out hunting squirrels with your BB gun, and an elephant shows up.

I think it’s safe to say that, anytime you go out kayak fishing, there is something to be learned. No matter how long you’ve been doing it; never be surprised at anything the fish do because, just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they do something different.

Mosquito Lagoon: The Sequel

In the movie business, if a studio releases a blockbuster movie, you can bet the house that a sequel is being planned before the movie ends its run in the theater, because the sequel is going to bring in dividends 40-60 percent of the original, and in that line of work, that’s pretty good business.

Well, the same goes for fishing trips with the Yakangler/Kayak Fishing Radio Crew. Before you could get the mud washed off your kayak and your gear put away after our triumphant return from Mosquito Lagoon during the Presidents Day Boondoggle, another trip to “The ‘goon” was being planned.

Surgeons Knot

Part of being successful at fishing is making sure that you can tie a reliable and strong line to line connecting knot. Nothing is worse than feeling that “Thunk!” on the end of your line and then, just like that…..he was gone, only to reel in a “little piggy” curly Q which will tell you that your knot came undone.
