So Many Baits Not Enough Time

I got hit with a care package from Mister Twister the other day, payment for a review I had done a while ago. Well to say I was blown away was an understatement, I thought they had forgotten about it and to tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting anything in return. Mostly RT Slugs in various colors, there were a few packs of crabs thrown in for good measure. So many baits and not enough time...

Kayak Fishing Cedar Key FL

Cedar Key is one of those areas, nestled in the “Big Bend” of Florida’s Gulf Coast. The area offers a wide variety of species to choose from, but two species stand out over all others: Red Drum, or Redfish, and their bigger cousin the Black Drum. Sitting just below the Suwannee River, Cedar Key is the largest island of many that make up this area. The old-fashioned fishing village is now a tourist center with several regionally famous seafood restaurants and the village holds two festivals a year, the Spring Sidewalk Art Festival and the Fall Seafood Festival, each of which attract thousands of visitors to the area.

Seems just like yesterday that I was down here in Stuart Florida for the DOA Lures Paddlers Only Tournament, I quess that old saying “Time flies when you’re having fun” really is true. Once again I find myself with my kayak fishing buddy Norm Hall and we set out with high hopes of finding some respectable fish.

A Shot at Redemption

In my last report I mentioned that fellow YakAngler Greg Becker had contacted me with questions about fishing our home waters of Tampa Bay. I invited Greg out one weekend, but was unsuccessful in putting him on some fish. They just weren’t biting that day. We kept in contact and made plans to hit the water again and this time everything fell into place.

Return to the Big Bend Day Three

We woke to an East wind which would really plague us all day. Again we were on the lookout for Tarpon. We did see some really big fish, but you couldn’t really set up on them real good. We sat on a sandbar and watched the sun come up, all the while to the sound of tarpon crashing bait.

Day Two – Foggy start

Our main target species for this trip was to be Tarpon, the big migratory fish show up this time of year, so this morning we were on the hunt for them. Kind of an eerie morning with some sea fog just out on the outer coast. We did see some big fish early, but they were hard to pattern as they would bust bait in one area then move on. They never really seemed to hang in one area to long. A bit later as the tide dropped some more, we came across an area that I would describe as a bowl. It was a deeper hole with water moving through it.

Return to the Big Bend Day 1

I was the third one to arrive for our three day fishing extravaganza, my friends Dave Robinson and Tom Coffee were already on the water, and so I launched finding them in short order. The weather improved after some serious morning rain, and once the sun came out and the wind died down it was fish on!!

DLeashes Review

Malibu Pro Staff member Donald Drabek has spent a lifetime on the water or in the woods. It was that experience that led him to start DLeashes.  Becoming frustrated with the choices of items like call lanyards and game straps, Donald learned the process of braiding parachute cord from a buddy who had been in the Navy.  Once he got into kayaking he started making his own paddle leashes as well as camera, rod and Boga Grip straps.
