I’ve always liked the way trebles hooked and held fish, but, naturally, they tend to do a bit more damage. This is even more troublesome when you’re trying to work quickly to remove a native spring chinook from your line for release. Now there is an answer…
Enter the Maruto Semi-Barbless Hook. I saw this at ICAST this year and was pretty excited about it. The unfortunate part for me at the time was that they’re only making these semi-barbless hooks in treble forms. I was thinking about octopus hooks for my salmon trolling and sturgeon baits. I had totally forgotten about my Kwikfish plugs that I enjoy using, and these hooks are a natural solution for me.
Maruto’s Semi-Barbless technology will likely be recognizable. It’s this type of knotched barb that mankind originally created. With the lack of a protruding barb, hooksets will be more solid. The micro-barbs of the Maruto hook will also hold on just as well as your regular barbed hooks. Much like a barbless hook, this hook will easily slip out of places its not supposed to be stuck too – upholstery, nets, hands, etc.
The hook point offers a razor profile and the Maruto Semi-Barbless treble hook is currently offered in sizes 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0 and 2/0. I’ll likely be working to replace the trebles on my bass lures with the Marutos. Now I’m just waiting for octopus hooks in 2-6/0.
