A New Fishing Experience

Growing up in Texas, my family would often go on winter camping and trout fishing trips in southeastern Oklahoma on the Mountain Fork River in Beaver’s Bend State Park, or the Blue River in Tishomingo, OK. Both offered rainbow trout stocked from hatcheries...

Casting For Recovery Raffle

On April 21, 2012 the New Jersey Chapter of Casting for Recovery(CFR) will be holding a raffle to raise funds for their programs. CFR provides opportunities for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a natural setting and learn the sport of fly fishing. Just as importantly, the retreats offer an opportunity to meet new friends, network, exchange information, and have fun.

One Of Those Dear Fly Rod Letters

I’ve never been good with words or saying I’m sorry. I’m not quite sure how to say this, so I’m just going to say it. Even though it’s hard for both of us, I’m sure that you’ll agree that it’s for the best.

Temple Fork Outfitters: BVK Reel

Temple Fork Outfitters released their new BVK Reel at this year’s 2011 ICAST show.  This rod was created to complement their already successful BVK series of rods.  The BVK would be equally at home in both fresh and salt water, perfect for the kayak fisherman who wants a well rounded fly reel. This great new product by TFO took “Best in Show” in the Fly Fishing Category.

Peabody Fly Fishing Report

I went back home to Western Kentucky over Memorial Day weekend.  I had a great visit with my family and a great fishing trip to boot!  Armed with my 5 wt. TFO Fly rod and a decent choice of bassin' flies, I may not have caught any trophies but I made up for that with the number of fish I caught.

Review TFO fly rods

Last October at our first-ever kayak fishing tournament in Kentucky I was lucky enough to win a fly rod donated by Temple Fork Outfitters and Reel Recovery. TFO makes affordable, high-performance fly rods, and if you haven't heard of Reel Recovery, they're a national, non-profit organization that conducts free fly fishing retreats for men recovering from all forms of cancer.  Something that inspires me a great deal after having lost my husband to cancer in 2008.

The Orvis Fly Fishing app is not only a great resource for the novice fly-fisher such as me, but would be useful to the experienced anglers as well. The amount of information packed into this app is unbelievable. In fact, before I made this purchase I had been literally dragging around the LL Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing anyplace I thought I may be able to steal a little reading time.  Now that information is neatly tucked away inside of my phone.

Simms G3 Waders

As the weather begins to cool, it becomes very important to discuss cold weather gear while kayak fishing.  Isaac did a great article on Dressing for success in the Snow which talked alot about layering and the importance of dressing for the weather conditions.  I wanted to present a secondary option for those who face more mild winters or for those that are simply fly fishing while wading this winter.

A Day Of Firsts

Last Friday some of the members of Kentucky Kayak Fishing planned a camping-fishing trip on the Cumberland River.  Every Kentucky state record trout has been caught on the Cumberland River; let’s just say I was excited.  I wasn’t able to head down Friday but met up with the group Saturday morning.  It would be the first time I got to meet our newest member Pam aka Yak Girl.  This would turn out to be a day of many firsts for me…

Abadbackcast Behind The Music

Lately many of you have been reading articles written by Rob DeVore.  You might have asked yourself who is he, why does his stuff get published on YakAngler?  Well I consider Rob a very entertaining writer and a friend. I first started reading his blog about a year ago and have been hooked ever since. I figured it was time our readers got to know Rob aka abadbackcast a little better…
