Tournament season is finally upon us and one of the most anticipated tournament trails was in full swing this past weekend in Jacksonville, FL. The IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie is one of the largest and most heavily promoted tournament series in the country.

The folks at Estero River Outfitters had been after me for the last couple of years to be on their Hobie Fishing Team. I kept declining because I liked the kayaks that I was using. As you have recently read here on YakAngler.com, four U.S. kayak anglers participated in the Hobie Kayak Fishing World Championships held in Australia. We here at YakAngler are so pleased to be part of this kayak fishing sport that is taking not only a national stage but playing in an international arena. Aussies take the first annual Diawa Hobie World Kayak Fishing Tournament. It should be no surprise that the Aussies took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in an event held on their home waters what was a surprise was how well Jose Chavez did. Jose led the tournament after the first day of fishing but slipped to 4th by tournaments end. Scott Baker of Mornington Victoria Australia took first being crowned the first Diawa Hobie Kayak Fishing World Champion, Jason Meech took second, and Kevin Winchester took third.
Look out Bassmasters, here comes the little plastic boats! This month 4 US Hobie Fishing Team members will compete in the first ever Kayak Fishing World Championship! The US team will compete against Hobie Fishing Teams from Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, and Australia. After a great season of kayak fishing the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour will host its final regular season event in Ruskin, Florida. You've seen many of the tournament recaps here on YakAngler and we are looking forward to seeing the tournmament results for this final event. This is a great program that is helping to grow the sport of kayak fishing in a huge way and we are happy to be able to spread the word with other kayak anglers.
