5 Fishing Kayaks Under $700

Like last week’s article, 5 Fishing Kayaks Under $500 my goal is to get you on the water and fishing. I don’t care if it’s a $50 kayak you bought off Craigslist or a $2,000 fully rigged yak you picked from you local dealer. If the boats get you onto the water and back safely in my eyes it’s a keeper. This week I came up with a list of 5 kayaks any angler can easily use for kayak fishing, this time they are all under $700.

5 Fishing Kayaks Under $500

Talking to many perspective kayak anglers, one thing I often hear is “I can’t afford a $1,000 - $2,000 kayak”. Many fishermen looking at buying a kayak feel overwhelmed by the cost of many popular fishing kayaks. Folks you don't need to rock a 2K dollar kayak to catch fish. I’ve compiled a list of 5 sit on top kayaks that are under $500, giving you some cheaper options to get out onto the water and fish.

Hobie Kayak Buyers Guide

Not only have I purchased & used 5 different models of Hobie mirage kayaks for fishing - Sport, Outback, Revolution, Adventure, Adventure Island, in that order - and used them all extensively (having pedaled, paddled and sailed them over 12,000km so far), I've also had the benefit of having spent a year working with the Australian Hobie factory, then spent a year selling them direct to public in a retail shop, as well as having worked with numerous dealers at trade shows around the country.

Thinking of Getting a Kayak?

My last few articles have been geared more towards artificial lures and rigging, so I thought I would start a series of articles on kayaking, what to get, how to rig it etc, etc.  First and foremost, kayak fishing is not for everyone.  It s definitely more low key than a power boat.  Your pretty much restricted to one area to fish, but do not let that be a deterrent.  Without getting into a debate over kayaking vs. power boats (we call them “Stinkpots”) I think kayak fishing has made me a better fisherman.  By slowing down, I’ve learned how to read water, learned how and why the fish move the way they do, learned how to use and what types of artificial lures work best and when to use them.  But I’ll save all that for future articles; today will be about deciding what kayak might be best for you.
